A Few Words From President Dave

Good morning Rotarians!

A big thank you
to all the Rotarians and their spouse/partners/friends who showed up to work in the West Seattle Grand Parade and Pawrade. It really does take a team! Big Special Thanks to our own Keith Hughes who spent hundreds of hours getting this thing to run, he can relax for bit now.

Hey big news! Our Publicity Guru Matt Amick has set up a new Instagram account (old one hadn’t been touched since 2015). And we are populating it with Parade photos. So, it you have an Instagram account please go like/follow it. @westseattle_Rotary (make sure you pick the underscore one). Then consider going on your FB and posting this message to your friends:

Hey FB Friends - The West Seattle Rotary club has opened a new Instagram page. Please like to follow what we are doing in our community. @westseattle_rotary - (Make sure you pick the underscored one!) Thanks

Take a moment to look at https://www.shorelinerotary.com/ this is part of the district rebrand going on ours will begin later this year, we will have a cool updated website. Any ideas of what should be on there to represent West Seattle Rotary let Matt know your ideas.

After the Meeting today we will conduct a short meeting of fund-raising ideas, so bring ideas and positive energy. This will be the last meeting of fund Raising I chair as I hand it off to our President Elect.

See you soon for a great lunch - our presentation will be on “Professional Mentorship” which is a great subject since we are doing just that with several of our programs.

Rotary First Harvest

Volunteers Needed for Saturday's RFH Work Party!

It's cherry season in the Northwest, and this year we're piloting a new initiative to bring fresh, nutritious cherries into food banks and programs serving those in need across our community.

This Friday morning, our friends at Safeway are donating trucking to deliver 20,000 pounds of fresh cherries from Wenatchee to the Northwest Harvest warehouse. We need volunteers to help us get the cherries repacked and ready for distribution Monday morning. If you have a few hours - we'd LOVE to have you join us!

Simply go to the RFH Volunteer Hub using the link below to register. It's a great opportunity to show friends and family how Rotary is making a positive impact right here in our community.

Slight Change in the Areas of Focus

The Rotary Foundation has made changes to Rotary’s areas of focus, which took effect 1 July. They have kept the existing six areas but adjusted three names (marked with asterisks) to better reflect the types of projects that Rotary members are carrying out. The areas of focus are now:

Peacebuilding and conflict prevention*
Disease prevention and treatment
Water, sanitation, and hygiene*
Maternal and child health
Basic education and literacy
Community economic development*

Some of the goals of the areas have changed, and we’ve included activities that relate to the environment for most areas.

The Rotary Foundation strives to process grants efficiently and ensure the quality of grant-funded projects. All grant requests must comply with the policy statement related to their intended area of focus. Project planning is the responsibility of the host club or district.

Ezra Teshome to lead District PolioPlus Fundraising Team

By Jeffrey A. Brennan on Monday, July 15, 2019

Steve Crane, who passed away last month, tirelessly and successfully led our district’s PolioPlus fundraising efforts as PolioPlus Chair years - Steve will be dearly missed. I am honored to announce that Past District Governor Ezra Teshome has wholeheartedly agreed to be our new District 5030 PolioPlus Chair. Ezra has been deeply committed to the effort to fight polio and since 1996 has been leading groups of Rotarians to Ethiopia to deliver polio vaccine drops. Please join me in welcoming and supporting Ezra as our PolioPlus Chair. Ezra will be focusing on building out a PolioPlus team to help with our district efforts to raise funds for The Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus Fund. Please contact Ezra or myself if you are interested in volunteering.
