WORLDWIDE POLIO SURVEILLANCE NEWS

We are often asked why do we need to raise so much money for polio, when there were only 33 cases in 2 countries last year? The simple answer is that we need to vaccinate every child in the world under five until polio is eradicated. That is 450 million children! Rotary helps fund laboratories, clinics, and field teams, including 150,000 workers in 70 countries. That costs a lot of money.

As we Countdown to History, Rotary and its partners have increased surveillance efforts to find the polio virus wherever it hides. Intensive surveillance followed by immunization campaigns prevented outbreaks in Brazil and Israel. Watch the 4 minute video above to learn more.

A PERSONAL STORY OF POLIO

By Christine Waugh

By Jody Driver as told to Chris Waugh

Baby boomers recall the ravishing effects of polio on some of their friends in school. But since a vaccine came out in the late 1950s, polio disappeared in the US. Younger generations often have little appreciation of the value of the vaccine that prevents this paralytic disease. Jody Driver, of the Florence Oregon Club, does. ~Chris Waugh

I was 8 in 1952, and a very active child.

It came on like the flu. I got a fever and was achy, but then I had trouble walking. Mom & Dad took me to the doctor. Polio was rampant at that time. All the wards in the hospitals were filled with children who had it. By then, I couldn’t walk.

My mom and dad didn’t want me in one of the polio wards, so they hired the doctor to come to our house every day. One day he’d give me a shot of Erythromycin in one cheek, then the next day the other cheek. The shots relieved the pain. And they did exercises that I couldn’t do myself. They would manipulate and massage my muscles, constantly.
