ROTARY ROOTS
The little red schoolhouse is a charming and inspiring part of Americana – celebrated by Hallmark, Rockwell, and in poetry and song. The Little Red Schoolhouse, a legacy of small-town America in a bygone era, has renewed life as the home of the Wallingford, Vermont Rotary Club.
The Little Red Schoolhouse in this southern Vermont community of 2,000 residents was erected in 1818 by James Rustin, the great-grandfather of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary. In 1928 six Rutland, Vermont Rotarians, boyhood friends of Paul Harris, purchased the property and established the Paul Harris Testimonial, in honor of Harris.
At the age of three Paul Harris, and his brother, were sent to live with his paternal grandparents in Wallingford, Vermont. Paul Harris went to school in the one-room schoolhouse his great grandfather built.
The Wallingford Rotary Club was given stewardship of the building in 1948. The Paul Harris Memorial Garden, on the Little Red Schoolhouse Property, was dedicated in 2012. Now the Schoolhouse is owned by Rotary District 7870 Foundation, and maintained by the Wallingford Rotary Club. Rotary District 7870 has incorporated the Little Red Schoolhouse in its logo.
The Wallingford Rotary Club claims on its website to be “The Birthplace Of Rotary”, but this Visiting Rotarian more accurately ascribes the title ?Boyhood School Of Rotary’s Founder, as the true founding city of Rotary is Chicago. The Wallingford Rotary Club meets in the Schoolhouse Monday mornings at 7:00 AM. The Little Red Schoolhouse contains banners from Rotary Clubs on every continent and oceans as well.

Brunswick City Administrator David Dunn Addresses the Smoketown Rotary Club

City Administrator David Dunn addressed the Rotary Club of Smoketown, Brunswick, Maryland at the club’s luncheon meeting on January 17. Dunn offered a “State of the City” update, highlighting the municipality’s financial status, capital improvements, and General Assembly legislative priorities. Dunn was accompanied by Brunswick City Councilman Andrew St. John and Brunswick Planning and Zoning Administrator, Bruce Dell.
Highlights of David Dunn’s remarks were:
+ Plans are advancing for the city’s new public safety and public works facility at 811 West Potomac Street; bid process to flow for the estimated five million dollar project, following county approvals.
+ Five-G small cell siting is high in the city’s legislative priorities in the current session of the state’s General Assembly.
+ Rutter’s has filed a petition for annexation into the City of Brunswick for a 25-acre property on the northwest corner of the rotary, diagonally across from Sheetz.
+ The city’s bond rating is “A-3”
+ The Railroad Square project is temporarily stalled, awaiting the next competitive round of applications for tax credits.
+ Infrastructure enhancements - replacement of aging water, sewer and storm waterlines - are a top capital expenditure need for the city.

David Dunn was appointed Brunswick City Administrator in February 2017. This was the second time Dunn managed the City of Brunswick. He served in this post from 2001 to 2010. Before he assumed the administrative role in 2001, Dunn spent 30 years with the Prince George’s County Police Department, ending his career as a sergeant in the narcotics division. He left Brunswick in 2010 after being recruited to work for Frederick County. He was assistant county manager, county manager, and a liaison to the municipalities for the county’s Board of Commissioners - a position that was eliminated in 2014, when the County adopted a new governance charter.
