President's Post

By David Vanasse on Tuesday, May 26, 2020

Happy Summer Y'all (unofficially)!

Memorial day has come and gone; the summer season upon us. I hope that you enjoyed your time with family and friends but also took time to honor the military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Art Wallace delivered an outstanding Memorial day program last week. His life experiences and military service were manifest. Thank you for the compliments received regarding the program as well. It's always good to hear feedback, but particularly nice when you feel we've done something well.

Congratulations to Gary Younts, our 100 club winner last week. We're looking forward to seeing his nice hair cut this week.

This week we will be recognizing our scholarship winners and students of the month (March- May). Please read on to learn more about them and be prepared to engage them, Friday.

I know it is late notice, but the school confirmed today that our T-shirt distribution is tomorrow. If you're interested in passing out shirt to WBHS Seniors that distribution is at the school from 9am - 4pm. Please read on for more details.

Lastly, our May Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 1. All are welcome to attend.

Yours In Rotary Service,

David

By Jennifer Hardee Vanasse on Tuesday, May 26, 2020

Rylee Cooper

Plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill with a major in clinical lab science. Her future plan is to become a pathologist. During the spring Rylee was a Novant Hospital Volunteer. She loves learning new things and challenging herself.

Jaymes Erwin

Plans to attend UNC Wilmington upon completing an Associate Degree in Science at Brunswick Community College. His future plans include using what he learns in college business classes to someday have his own business. Jaymes enjoys golfing and credits a lot of what he has learned and become from participation in the First Tee program.

Olivia Fish

Olivia will be attending Brigham Young University this fall with a major in biology. She aspires to use her studies to become a dentist. In 2017 she founded Home Again, Dog Rescue which to date has rescued more than 50 dogs.

Jay Fletcher

Jay will attend Wingate University and hopes to continue participating in football while enrolled there. Jay, a past SBI Rotary SOM, hopes to one day be a football coach, but is pursing studies in history with the goal of becoming a teacher. He enjoys the ‘storytelling’ aspect of history. Jay believes in “not letting what other people think about you affect you”.

James Caleb Hughes

Caleb has been accepted into the Virginia Military Institute and happily accepted this appointment. He hopes to become a military officer/leader with a mechanical engineering degree. Throughout his high school years he has been actively involved with the ROTC and credits Retired Col. Joseph Calisto, his ROTC instructor, with his desire to serve in the military.

Joseph Reid Miller

Reid will be attending East Carolina University in the fall and majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Reid says I “strive to make the Rotary Club motto of Service Above Self a guiding force in my everyday life”.

Upon completion of his schooling, Reid plans to become a part of his father’s business ‘Jim’s Car Care’.

Kayla Nichole Ward

Kayla will be attending NC State University this fall with a major in bio science. Her future goal is to work with children in the health field either in pediatrics or pediatric oncology. During high school she was a volunteer for Special Olympics and the Multiple Sclerosis Marathon. She was also actively involved in student government and during her senior year was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper.

WBHS Interact Scholarship Winners Spotlight

By Jennifer Hardee Vanasse on Tuesday, May 26, 2020

Leianna Austin High

Austin is no stranger to our Rotary Club. We have seen her many times volunteering or participating in our activities (golf tournament, Wilmington Down Syndrome Walk, Foundation Luncheon). While attending Brunswick Community College during her senior year (Career and College Promise Applied Science Candidate), Austin still found time to be actively involved in WBHS Interact Club. According to Austin Interact has assisted her in public speaking comfort and leadership growth. Austin will attend Liberty University with a major in forensic science.

Mason Hon

Mason will attend NC State with a major in chemical engineering. He has been a member of the Interact Club for the last three years and held the Co-President position during his senior year. His participation includes the Science Olympiad, Student Government Association, Relay for Life and initiating a Trojan Tutor program. This past October Mason participated in our club’s Rise Against Hunger food packaging at St. James to assist those devastated by the hurricane in the Bahamas.

Zion Smith

Zion will be attending UNC Charlotte with a career goal of business / communication journalism. Zion has 7 older siblings none of whom pursued a higher education; Zion hopes to be the first to achieve his academic goal of a college education. He was recognized as a Rotary SOM during this school year and believes in ‘giving back’ to those less fortunate than himself. His volunteering activities include tutoring at Waccamaw and Jessie Mae and donating items needed by the homeless.

Richard Lancaster Band Service Award Recipient

By Jennifer Hardee Vanasse on Tuesday, May 26, 2020

Lilly Gilliland

"Lilly has spent countless hours over the last 4 years helping students with music, marching, and helping the band during the summer, after school and weekends working in the concession stand, building and painting painting props for our show and numerous other activities. She has given many hours of service to the band." - Jason Seip, WBHS Band Director

Isabelle James-Hutson

During her freshman year at Carolina State University, Isabelle achieved a 3.58 grade point average. Prior to the abrupt closure of school this spring, Isabelle participated in volunteer activities in her university community. These include NCSU Turtle Rescue Team, Women in Science and Engineering, Christmas cards for children at St. Jude’s Hospital, STEM Night at a local elementary and “Feed the Pack” a food drive run by the NCSU Rugby team. Isabelle says she “joined organizations that had volunteerism as part of their core values.”

Recognizing our Student of the Month (March - May)

By Jennifer Hardee Vanasse on Tuesday, May 26, 2020

Conor Berry

Conor is an avid outdoorsman who, while enjoying time with friends, makes his grades a priority. Conor has a strong competitive spirit and was a member of the Varsity Swim Team as well, on the Varsity Baseball Team. His leadership and desire to help others was demonstrated by his achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, being a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, earning his Wild Life Safety Certificate, and earning his license as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Conor plans to pursue his career in the Medical Field; starting at Brunswick Community College earning a Registered Nurse Degree then transferring to East Carolina to complete a Batchelor’s of Nursing.

Jade Faircloth

Jade is a very hard working, determined young lady. She always strives for the best and works hard to help others. She has a strong moral compass and is a fabulous person to work with. She is focused and committed to doing really good work. Jade is not satisfied with anything less than the very best. Mr Gorritz, Jade’s English teacher for two years commented, “What I really like about Jade as a student is that, even when she didn’t understand something or like it, she still put her whole effort into it. What I like about her as a person is that she was tolerant and accepting of everybody in the class and of all perspectives and opinions.” Jade will continue her education at Brunswick Community College.

Kayla Ward

Kayla’s determination and drive are two qualities that have shaped her into who she is today. Through high school she has pushed herself out of her comfort zone and she feels like she has grown into a better person. She has evolved into a leader that she never imagined herself being. She worked hard and made the school subjects that were some of her weaknesses into her strengths. She was a cheerleader freshman and sophomore year, and played tennis junior and senior year. Kayla is senior class president, Editor in Chief of the school newspaper, treasurer of the National Honor Society, and co-captain of science Olympiad. Kayla is excited to take her new qualities with her as she continues her education at NC State University. She will be majoring in Bioscience: Human Biology. After undergrad Kayla will apply to medical school to become a pediatrician!“

Volunteer Opportunities with Samara's Village

By Jennifer Hardee Vanasse on Tuesday, February 25, 2020

Right now, Samara’s Village has several opportunities for people to become Villagers through volunteerism. We have several girls waiting for a home visitor to provide one-on-one support to and equip them to raise healthy babies. Similarly, we need fatherhood mentors to work with the babies’ fathers. We also have opportunities in many support positions, such as office help, board members with professional experience in law, accounting, education, and mental health. Maybe you don’t have the time to give any of those positions, but many of our committees need team members to accomplish fundraising, finance, and public relations, to name a few.

If you’re interested in being a part of this life changing and personally rewarding program please visit our website (www.samarasvillage.org) or contact any of the following: Janis Gassenmeyer (Volunteer Coordinator) janis@samarasvillage.org (251) 605-7660 Debbie Keener (Program Director) (717) 891-3013 debbiekeener@samarasvillage.org Karyn Ducey (Home Visitor Team Leader): karyn@samarasvillage.org (585) 410-0887 Tony Rizzo (Fatherhood Mentor) tony@samarasvillage.org (617) 335-3750 Susan Harman (board member, Marketing & PR) susan@samarasvillage.org (910) 620-4897
