A Message from Governor Dawn - Let's Open OpportunitiesBy Dawn W. Rochelle When people ask me why Rotary? Why do I choose to spend my time as I do? Well, that is simple. I want to be around the light bringers, the magic makers, the world shifters, the game shakers. That is all of you. You challenge me, you uplift and expand me. None of you let me play small with my life. You are my heartbeat and my people. You are my worldwide family grounded in ethics and values that we all use to right our ship and guide us when we are unsure. Read More |

Good News StoryBy Norman RogersIn U.S. Congressman's David Rouzer's recent Newsletter our District was featured as the Good News Story. "For today’s good news story, I’m highlighting the work of Rotary International District 7730, which covers all of southeastern North Carolina. Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, the 1,800+ Rotarians in southeastern NC have raised almost $27,000 to buy food to help feed those in need because of the crisis. Bolstered by a $25,000 grant from Rotary International, the group was able to buy enough foodstuffs to provide 20,000 meals to food pantries, Salvation Army chapters and Family Assistance Groups all across our region. It’s just one of the ways America’s civic organizations are working together to combat the crisis."

Shallotte Rotary Club Installs New Officers!By Dianne W. BennettOur Shallotte Rotary Club is not letting Covid-19 slow us down! The officer installation and new member induction ceremony was held at Mulberry Park in Shallotte on June 24th with an opportunity to join a fun “Social Distancing” event. Special thanks to Area District Governor, Chris Stevenson for your participation and encouragement. Laurel Bellamy who served two concurrent terms as President, graciously handed over the gavel to our new President Kelli Pratt. A Rotarian since 2018, Kelli has embraced her leadership role with enthusiasm and a promise for a year of growth as she quoted our new Rotary International President, Holger Knaack, that “Rotary isn’t just a club for people to join, but rather an invitation to endless opportunity”. Beginning this month, follow our Shallotte Rotary Club Facebook page as we start to “Show and Tell” our community the many meaningful projects that we participate in. As Kelli states, “we are people of action”. Join us each week as we continue to hold our monthly ZOOM meetings at 12:30, where our wonderful group will continue to find ways to serve our community as our new normal. Bring a friend – just let us know and we will be sure they receive a link!

Game On - Our Own Jeff Mount featured in South Brunswick MagazineBy Lin KellyJeff Mount, a member of South Brunswick Islands Rotary and District Governor Nominee was featured in an article in the Summer issue of the South Brunswick Magazine. The article was written by Beth Klahre. The article is entitlted "Game On!" His love for chess has branched out into a volunteer program that teaches chess to students. He started at Southport Elementary for grades 3 through 5 in 2014. A year later branched out to South Brunswick Middle School and then Supply Elementary & Bolivia Elementary. Since he started the program he has recruited volunteers to help run the programs. Not only are the students excited but parents reach out to him when they run into him in restaurants asking if their child can enroll in the program. He enjoys watching the kids learn chess and actually teaching chess to the other kids. He was quoted in the article as saying "I thoroughly enjoy seeing how much they are into a classic old game like chess. In this video game world, it's a pleasant Surprise." Not only does he teach them chess but teaches them algebraic notation to document their play on paper. He said this allows them to replay their games. This makes them think about their next moves. He says they don't even realize they are actually learning if/then statements, one of the building blocks of computer coding. Make sure you pick up a copy of the magazine. |

Service Above Self Award Given to 4 Local Students!By M. Shawn BraswellEvery year the Southport Evening Rotary Club honors students in Brunswick County who are continually putting the needs of others above their own needs. These students and their actions exemplify the Rotary International motto “Service Above Self”.
The Southport Evening Club honors one student from the 5th Grade at Southport Elementary School, the 8th Grade at South Brunswick Middle School, and a Senior from South Brunswick High School with a certificate and monetary award. The teachers and staff at these schools nominate and select the award recipients. This Service Above Self Award is not intended for the most academic, most athletic, most artistic, or most musical student. This award is intended for the most caring student, the student who always offers to help without asking anything in return, and the student who always carries a positive attitude and shares this positivity with others.
For the 2019-2020 school year, the Southport Evening Rotary Club would like to congratulate these students on winning the Service Above Self Award: Kenneth Blake Herring who is a graduating 5th grader from SES, both Eliel Flores Lopez and Kileigh Caton who are graduating 8th graders from SBMS, and Anhelys Barajas-Rivera who is a graduating Senior from SBHS. All recipients of the Service Above Self Award receive certificates, gift cards for the SES & SBMS students, and scholarship money for the SBHS graduating senior.
