Club Meeting October 4 - Matt Shook - Founder/CEO JuiceLand

As per “Meet the Man Behind JuiceLand’s Texas Empire” by Chris Hughes in the
January, 2021,
Austin Monthly:

“The city’s live music scene and a girlfriend living in nearby San Marcos certainly played a part in Matt Shook’s move to Austin in 1996, but the owner of JuiceLand says those were all secondary to his one true motivation: “I got mesmerized by the idea of being a slacker,” he says. “My No.1 goal was exerting as little effort as I could get away with. You combine Barton Springs and all your friends’ couches, and you have a pretty good recipe for that.”

The Nacogdoches transplant found it easy to fulfill his laid-back dream, subsidizing that newfound lifestyle by working shifts at a smoothie bar on Barton Springs Road called The Juice Joint. Opened by a bartender at The Continental Club to peddle every imaginable type of green (“they didn’t call it The Juice ‘Joint’ for nothing,” says Shook) then sold to another owner in 2000, Shook was hired on during a tumultuous period that saw massive cost-cutting and a noticeable dip in quality. Produce was no longer purchased fresh or organic, employees were forced to work with inferior ingredients, and its customer base stopped showing up during lulls at the springs. Or, as Shook explains: ‘Hippies don’t like Jif [peanut butter]; health nuts can tell the difference.’ …“

EAFK at Austin's Pecan Springs Elementary

By Mary L. Reynolds

Austin’s Pecan Springs hosted their EAFK knighting ceremony for the trait of Citizenship. Lady Amber presented the student honorees with a medallion and their parents were invited to share an honor with their child.

This character building program is sponsored by the University Area Rotary , Cosmopolitan Rotary and Rotary Club of Austin.

The teachers love the program because it reduces discipline problems by 30-60% and gives the teachers more quality teaching time. Parents love it because the award is based on a student ‘s character, not academics or athletic skills.

Way to go, Rotary!

Thanking Our Military

By Mary L. Reynolds on Wednesday, September 28, 2022
PFC Garza and her husband spent a special complimentary weekend in Austin at the Hampton Inn Cedar Park.

This program called Operation Vacation Ft Hood was started by the Rotary Clubs of Austin and Killeen fifteen years ago as a way to thank our military soldiers for their service.

The hotel furnished a two-night stay with breakfast each morning. The County Line on the Hill provided a fabulous BBQ dinner on Saturday with all the trimmings. The Rotary Club of Killeen arranged a rental car and gas money for the couple and the Rotary Club of Austin set up a gift bag with fast food gift cards, groceries, snacks and free passes to Austin Parks and Pizza.

This is such a fun way to show our military that we care. Thanks!
We received a wonderful thank you note from the family.
Thank you so so much for the amazing weekend. My husband and I really appreciate everything you did for us!!! It is a trip we will never forget. Austin was amazing! I think it will one day become my retirement home. The food was spectacular! We got to meet the owner and everything! And the hotel was so amazing as well. Thank you so much for what you do!

We really really appreciate everything! PFC Angie Garza.
