WildLights at the Zoo!

By Jimmy Hoben on Sunday, October 23, 2022
The social committee would like to invite all WSR Rotarians – and their families – to tour the Wild Lights at the Zoo together! On Sunday, December 4th at 5:00 p.m. we will all meet at the south end of the Conservation Lake, grab a drink or a snack, and walk the zoo together. (The meet-up location is highlighted in the attached map). Our plan is to walk for 90 minutes, starting at 5:15, but folks can come and go as they please. (In fact, our resident Zoo expert, Tom Strasburg, encourages people to come earlier during the daytime for a chance to see more animals!)

This is an informal event, so you’ll just buy the tickets yourself at the gate or on the Zoo’s website. Of course, if you are Zoo members, you get in free!

If interested, just sign up here so we can look out and make sure we don’t start walking without you!https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0B44ADA729A0F85-zooholiday

We’d love to see everyone bring their families out for this fun walk!

Rotary District 6690 Obtains Disaster Response Grant to Benefit Ukraine

Our District 6690 has just been awarded a $25,000 Rotary Disaster Response Grant
to support displaced families in Ukraine who are suffering from the ravages of war. Many of you contributed to this special fund in March and April this year, and we want to let you know that those contributions are helping tens of thousands of people in Ukraine and surrounding countries to provide disaster relief to refugees from this war.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in March, Rotary International has collected over $15 million dollars to provide humanitarian aid including water, food, shelter, medicine and clothing to regions that are supporting Ukrainian refugees and other victims of the war. Clubs and individual members of clubs in our district contributed over $62,000 to support this effort.

When the war broke out earlier this year, Rotary International mobilized and put out a call to action, and you answered the call. Based on the outpouring of financial support from Rotary members across the globe, Rotary made a special exception to its standard policies to allow Rotary districts to apply for Disaster Response Grants to benefit Ukraine – normally a district may apply for Disaster Response Grants only for disasters within its own geographic boundaries.

District 6690 applied for a Disaster Response Grant on behalf of the Rotary Club of Kyiv International. This week, we received the grant and have provided the funds to District 2232 in Ukraine to help pay for 100 beds, 200 mattresses, 200 sets of sheets and 3 water filters to outfit empty schools and other government buildings that are being repurposed as family shelters during the war. These Disaster Response Grants can be awarded multiple times until the end of the program period (currently, December 31, 2022) or when the special funds are depleted. We plan to process as many grants for Ukraine as we can during this period.

Thank you for your support of this project – your donations to The Rotary Foundation are really making a difference during this critical period.
