IN THE SPOTLIGHT: WES MOORE

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: WES MOORE

According to the Washington Post, the historical inauguration of Wes Moore as Maryland’s first Black Governor is “a heartwarming reminder that institutions can refresh to mirror those they serve,” a sentiment shared by not only the voters in Maryland but by supporters across the nation. Governor Moore is only the third ever African American elected as Governor in the US. The popular author of The Other Wes Moore and The Work is an army veteran and non-profit CEO of distinction. His plan is to “unify the state with a message to leave no one behind.”

His family, friends, and fans are wishing him the best!

LUNAR NEW YEAR 2023: A YEAR OF HOPE HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR

LUNAR NEW YEAR 2023: A YEAR OF HOPE

By Dottie McIntyre

The Lunar or Chinese New Year celebrations in 2023 begin January 22 and culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 5. Celebrated by 50 million people worldwide in China and other Asian countries, as well as countries with significant Asian populations, everyone is welcome to take part in the festivities which include family, fireworks, delicious food (especially a gooey desert), horoscopes, and gift giving, usually red envelopes filled with well wishes and money. Since the colors red and gold symbolize good fortune and prosperity, they are used extensively in the festivities.

Since Asian Americans are the fastest growing population in America, the holiday festivities which are open to everyone are quite popular, so popular that the day is a state holiday in California and an official school holiday in New York City. A US legislator plans to introduce legislation this year to make it a federal holiday to acknowledge the richness of diversity in our country.

2023, which is the year of the Water Rabbit, is predicted to be a year of hope. The Water Rabbit replaces the Tiger of the previous year. People born in 2023, 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951, 1939, 1927, 1915…are Rabbits: “witty, quick-minded, and ingenious.” The sign of the Rabbit “is a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese cultures.” Rabbits are “caring and affectionate.”
In researching this article, I found that I am not a Rabbit, although I would rather be. I will just have to work harder at overcoming some of my negative characteristics. Rotary encourages me and all of us to be our better selves.

“Gong hei fat choy.”
