Youth Exchange Ski Weekend!

By Patricia Carson on Tuesday, February 7, 2023

This successful weekend was hosted by the Sandpoint club, who did a fantastic job organizing everything for the students and the Youth Exchange (YE) Committee (thank you, Sandpoint! You rock!). The kids had a great time! The YE Committee uses this time to have a meeting.

One of the results of this meeting is that they are short members! If you are interested in serving with this wonderful program (the world's best peacebuilding program!), please contact Pat Carson (patlesster@gmail.com). This is a wonderful committee doing wonderful, heartfelt work ~ it would be a great committee to learn from, and to invest your precious time in peace in the world. Secretary, future outbound coordinator, an event planner (things like the halloween celebration, winter weekend, District tour, Conference celebration), and document editing are the primary needs.

District Budget Preview – 2024 Rotary Fiscal Year

By Doreen Fox Kelsey on Tuesday, January 31, 2023

Declining membership numbers combined with increasing costs have placed considerable pressure on district finances. Consequently, as a district, we must reduce spending and find additional sources of revenue.

Our district’s primary source of revenue is membership dues. Raising dues is not a desirable option as we are compelled to make Rotary affordable. Fewer members, especially younger members, have dues paid by their employers. And in many communities, Rotary Clubs compete for members and volunteers with other non-profit organizations that may not have dues. The only way to increase revenue from membership dues, without raising dues, is to increase membership. Toward that objective, significant emphasis will be placed on strengthening Rotary Clubs and adding new clubs in the coming year.

By David Andrew Keyes on Monday, February 6, 2023
Please be on the lookout for an email heading your way to announce the opening of nominations for District awards!
Do you know someone who should be considered as our Rotarian of the Year?
Has your club had a strong year worthy of being District 5080 large club or smaller club of the year?
Know anyone who you might deserve a lifetime achievement award?
These awards and more will be presented at our District Conference in May.

RYLA Announcement! (Rotary Youth Leadership Award)

By Debi Dockins on Monday, February 6, 2023
This year, we are hoping to hold an in-person RYLA session - you remember RYLA, right? (Our last in-person camp was 2019.) (There is lots of information via Google)

It's our 18-25 aged adults leadership retreat led by Rotarians and returning campers who have grown in their leadership skills. The event is generally held in July, over Canada Day and the US 4th of July. (This has allowed participation as sometimes these are paid holidays for our attendees, many who are students or level-entry workers.)

Why am I telling you this? Because we (the RYLA staff) would like to determine the interest level of clubs who have sent us participants in the past. Read More

The Coeur d’Alene Evening Rotary (Rotary on the Rocks) presented CASA with 5 hand made Loop Yarn Blankets that the club had made in their previous meeting. Each blanket took about 3 hours to make. The Blankets will be added to the Kids Closet for North Idaho CASA.

Rotary Builds Peace

By William Dunwoody
February has been designated as the Rotary Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month.

During this month a number of Peacebuilding activities occur, including the planning for the upcoming D5080 | D5100 Peacebuilders in Action Summit scheduled for 18 May 2023
and the beginning of the period for
application submission for the Rotary Peace Fellows Scholarship program for 2024-2025.

This month is especially important to our District since the decision was made to become a Peacebuilder District in June 2022 and we have a number of Peacebuilder Clubs designated by the Rotary Action Group For Peace that have committed to working on Peacebuilding initiatives at the grassroots level. These Clubs include:
  • District 5080 Passport Peacebuilder Club (Jan 2020)
  • Tri-Cities Sunrise Rotary Club (Mar 2020)
  • Pasco Kennewick Rotary Club (Mar 2020)
  • Columbia Center Rotary Club (Nov 2020)
  • Richland Rotary Club (Nov 2020)
  • Walla Walla Rotary Club (Apr 2022)
  • Grand Forks Rotary Club (Apr 2022)

Statement from Rotary International

At Rotary, we have no tolerance for racism. Promoting respect, celebrating diversity, demanding ethical leadership, and working tirelessly to advance peace are central tenets of our work.

We have more work to do to create more just, open and welcoming communities for all people.

We know there are no easy fixes and that challenging conversations and work lie before all of us. Rotary’s strength has long been our ability and commitment to bringing people together. We will tap into that strength now as we stand with those who are working for peace and justice.

Rotary will do our part to listen, learn and take action to ensure that we continue to contribute to making positive change.

Help Rotary recruit peace and development leaders

Monday, February 6, 2023
Applications for the 2024 Rotary Peace Fellowships are now available!

You can help promote peace in the world by encouraging peace and development leaders in your community to apply for the Rotary Peace Fellowship.

Each year, Rotary awards fully funded fellowships for peacebuilders from diverse backgrounds to study at one of our peace centers located at premier universities around the world. This year, we’ll select 50 peace fellows to study in our master’s degree programs and 40 fellows to earn a professional development certificate.

Rotary Peace Fellows use their training to amplify their work at the local, regional, or global level. Clubs and districts can partner with them on peacebuilding initiatives before, during, and after their fellowships.

But we need your help finding candidates. Rotary and Rotaract members can get involved by: Read More

The Rotary Foundation has established two temporary funds to help people in Pakistan and Ukraine.

By Linda Kay Bauer on Tuesday, January 31, 2023
As a global humanitarian organization, Rotary continually takes action to help communities in need. Because you are a dedicated leader in Rotary, we want you to be among the first to know that The Rotary Foundation has established two temporary funds to support immediate relief efforts in Pakistan and Ukraine. In Pakistan, a severe monsoon season has caused devastating floods and affected millions of people. In Ukraine, the ongoing war has led to a continued humanitarian crisis. We’ll begin fundraising efforts soon to finance disaster response grants from these funds.

National Immunization Day (NID) in India, January 2020

By Emily Osborne on Friday, January 6, 2023
(* note from the editor: I found this gem whilst cleaning up my emails; it is a belated report from a crucial trip many Rotarians made to India for a National Immunization Day (NID), the last NID that used the oral polio vaccine (OPV), which is a modified live vaccine. That is useful when a large population needs to be immunized as untrained volunteers can administer. After this massive undertaking, India switched to the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), which is a strategy for countries that have achieved a safer level of immunizations in a population. Several members from our District took advantage of this invitation and traveled to India for this experience. Emily Osborne sent this to me, and now I'm happy to be sharing it with you!)

Here is some great info on Polio and NID day that Kristin Thompson (Spokane South), Emily Osborne (Liberty Lake) and Katie Schuerman (Colville) attended in India with Brad Howard Tours in January 2020. We had an amazing time with a packed full Agenda. We saw the Dalai Lama at our hotel, the Taj Mahal, we rode elephants, got to work with the kids in the schools, and do door to door Polio Immunizations. Attended several Rotary meetings, toured Jaipur Foot factory and a Polio ward/hospital where it was hard to fight back tears. When we left India, a woman that had been escorting us door to door for immunizations (who didn’t speak any English) hugged me and said in English “You are my gift”. I have never felt more welcome in a country than I did in India, the people there are just amazing. Read More

Polio Update: Itzak Perlman

By Dave Simpson on Thursday, January 26, 2023
This past week Wendy and I were fortunate enough to attend a concert with Itzhak Perlman and pianist Rohan de Silva. A fantastic opportunity especially as Perlman is a driving force behind polio eradication. Asked to write an article on this extraordinary man seemed best done by recounting his story as written by Perlman himself.

Itzhak Perlman is a violinist and Rotary Polio Ambassador:

“At the age of four, I quickly had to come to terms with the devastating reality of contracting polio. I was born in Israel in 1945, but it would be another decade before the country began a national immunization program. ..."

Update: Impact of World Polio Day

Thursday, January 12, 2023

Did your club do a World Polio Day event? If so, you were part of this!!!

Rotary members and supporters took action on World Polio Day, 24 October, to raise awareness and funds toward eradicating polio:

  • More than 4,200 Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact clubs in 118 countries registered their participation in World Polio Day.
  • Donors contributed more than US$740,000 online, which meant a total — with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s 2-to-1 match — of more than $2.2 million.
  • Social media efforts tied to World Polio Day reached 31 million people, compared to 17 million in 2021.

Once again, Rotary’s members and supporters united to show tremendous support for Rotary’s Number One Goal…the elimination of polio from the face of the earth.

District 5080 Grants Records

Are you wondering what kinds of grants other clubs in our District are doing? Are you curious as to how District Grant monies are being spent, and how transparent about it District leadership is? You can find out easily! Just go to our website: district5080.org., and click on the Foundation tab on the left hand menu. Scroll down to Grants and open that. At the very top you will see Record of Global, District & Express Grants Funded & Completed. If you open that you'll be able to see who's done what with what funding. It's fun and inspiring!

Grants Management Update

Based on feedback from several clubs and Rotarians throughout the District, it has become apparent that there is some confusion with regard to The Rotary Foundation's standards for District and Global Grant Management. To ensure the integrity of the Foundation and the continued permission of the District to administer these grants, it is essential that the rules of Grant Management be followed as outlined in the various documents provided by The Rotary Foundation and published on the District 5080 website. Let's Make Camp Rotary Happen!

By Linda Kay Bauer on Tuesday, January 31, 2023
Bonners Ferry Rotary owns a 17 acre wooded park a few miles outside of town. It is just south of the Canadian border. We are checking out the feasibility of adding cabins, a bathhouse, kitchen, and conference space to the property to turn it into a camp where we can hold RYLA, Youth Exchange retreats, District Council meetings, and such. The camp would be available to the public to rent as well, as the intent is to make it self sustainable.

There is a lot of work to be done to know if this endeavor is feasible. We need help with project management, infrastructure planning, design architect, legal advisor, capital fundraising campaign manager, and probably other talents. Please let me know if you would like to join the team. Once we know if this is do-able it will go before our District Council for approval. Let's make this happen! lindakaybauer@gmail.com

Regional Rotary scholar update!

By Kyle J. Weir on Saturday, January 21, 2023
Xuan Nhi Nguyen is a medical student at WSU (Washington State University). Her goal is to help plug the gaps in medical care for vulnerable communities; hopefully by setting up a system that makes it permanent. Her education is sponsored by several Rotary clubs in many Districts. Our own Spokane 21 is a generous donor to this remarkable woman's education.
Because medical school is not a one year gig, donations to her scholarship are still being accepted. Please go to bellevuesunriserotary.org/rotary-scholarship. There is more information about Ms Nguyen, as well as about this scholarship program on that site.

Pedaling Toward Prosperity

Monday, February 6, 2023
A few years ago, Jorge Romero walked his daughter, Mariangel, to school every morning, and every afternoon he accompanied her home. She was 13 at the time, and the 2.5-mile trek in Galapa, a town on the outskirts of Barranquilla, Colombia, was "too dangerous for a girl to walk on her own," Romero explains. The family couldn't afford other means of transportation. But walking his daughter to school meant that Romero, a day laborer, missed out on getting in the labor queue early enough to grab opportunities to work. Read More

What is Blue Denim?

Tuesday, January 31, 2023
Different paths in Rotary can provide some astounding leadership training. One path is serving your club at the leadership level. Joining a committee or serving as a Chairperson of a committee are paths right at your fingertips as a Rotarian.

Rotary makes sure you get quality leadership training if you choose to go on and serve your club as President by requiring attendance at 'PETS', which stands for President-Elect Training Seminar, hosted by a District or a collection of Districts. There are PETS all over the world, and just like clubs, they have their own 'culture'. We are one of ten very fortunate Districts that make up a Pacific Northwest group. They love working together; they create the 'PNWPETS' - Pacific Northwest PETS, which is one of the highest rated in the world. It brings together over 600 Rotary club Presidents-Elect to share ideas and prepare to serve as leaders of a group of dedicated volunteers in their communities, and top quality inspirational people and Rotary notables.
