| | This Week's ProgramChoices in Aging: Planning for your Preferred FutureHeather M. Young, PhD, RN, FAAN Professor, Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing University of California DavisMany people spend more time planning for after their death by establishing wills and trusts than in planning for their remaining years. Aging brings many opportunities and challenges including where to live, how to live meaningfully, and assure connection with others and needed supports. There are two major approaches to planning for aging: to wait until health or social circumstances prompt a decision, or to engage in thoughtful deliberation, creating a roadmap for the future. Planning ahead enables self-reflection, conversation, and time to evaluate and select feasible opportunities. Heather will highlight critical reflections for thoughtful planning, including personal values and preferences, potential future needs, and resources to get started.
A nurse leader, educator, scientist and internationally recognized expert in gerontological nursing and rural health care, Heather M. Young is national director of the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship Program for Nurse Leaders and Innovators, professor, and founding dean emerita of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. Young researches healthy aging with a particular focus on the interface between individuals, family and formal health care systems. She co-leads the Healthy Aging in a Digital World initiative at UC Davis Health and co-directs the Family Caregiving Institute and is a Senior Policy Fellow with the AARP Public Policy Institute focusing on policy and systems supports for family caregivers. Between 2003 and 2008, she directed the John A. Hartford Center for Geriatric Nursing Excellence at Oregon Health and Science University on our Southern Oregon University campus. Prior to that, she held a joint appointment on faculty at the University of Washington School of Nursing and as the chief operations officer of a retirement community company, designing and managing an array of residential and skilled nursing programs. This week's meeting (noon Thursday) will be basic hybrid Zoom: both in-person at Wesley Hall, and via Zoom with a single camera at the podium: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/ 75456456036?pwd= bEdkTVRSNkFyUENxbDJ5RElHVWtVZz 09

Last Week's ProgramOur guests last week included Doreen O'Skea, guest of Jade Chavis, Aliah John (Student of the Month), and her parents, Tracey John and Chris John.
RCA Club Assembly
President John summarized our club's goals, strategy, projects, and training.
We are 3 members short of our membership goal of 90. Of our fundraising goals, we are at 83% of our $15K goal for the annual fund, and we have already exceeded our $5K goal in support of PolioPlus.
The Social and Member Engagement committee held very successful events, including the Pompadour hike, the German Beer Garden at Growler Guys, and a luncheon at the Schneider Art Museum, not to mention the Circle of Friends meetings and the forthcoming "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" event.
Our service projects include World Community Service, Ashland Reads, the Rotary Garden contributing to the food bank, the Easter Egg Hunt, a food composting project launched by the Environment and Sustainability committee, the Oregon Battle of the Books, the Weekend Backpack Food program, and Christmas gifts for the Senior Center.
Our youth service includes International Youth Exchange, support for Interact and Rotaract, the 4-Way Test Speech Contest, and RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Academy).
Last week's meeting was recorded and edited (thanks Jack Fenster!): Ashland Rotary Mtg._02-16-23 |

RitualsThere was no opening song last week, but Burt Bacharach passed away February 8th and Sarah Britton will lead us (in the near future) in a medley of opening lines of some of his most famous hits. For our reflection, Kerry Kencairn shared a quote by Bob Marley: "You open your heart knowing there is a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that's so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting, and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are part of your life." |
