DG Lance March Message

Greetings District 6580 Rotarians.

It is hard to believe that March is already upon us. With our recent warm weather, I am certainly getting a little bit of spring fever. I hope that you all are able to get outdoors and enjoy some of the treasures which Southern Indiana has to offer. For Rotary International, March is an important month as we highlight one of our most important resources: water, sanitation, and hygiene. As many of us are blessed in the United States to have access to clean water and sanitation, that is not true of many places in the world. The recent issue of the Rotary Magazine highlights how Rotarians have come together in Lebanon in an attempt to bring clean drinking water to nearly every school in the country. To date, the last 1,000 schools have received filters and water tanks to provide clean water. Amazing what Rotarians can do by coming together in service.

March also represents the start of our spring storms. Many of us have been close to friends and family who have been impacted by natural disasters. We do not have to look much further than Kentucky to see the impacts of severe tornados or floods and to Ohio to see the impact of the recent trail derailments. Rotary has played a leading role in these communities by raising funds and collecting supplies for the relief efforts that have followed. I am excited that District 6580 is proactively looking to playing a leading role in our communities if disaster strikes with the formation of a non-profit corporation to assist in the collection of funds and supplies if the need should arise. More on this effort will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.

Lastly, a couple of things to keep in mind. Please register for the upcoming Zoom session on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion on March 8th. Sigrid Solomen will be joining us to look at how we can make our clubs welcoming for all. Also, please plan to join us for the District Conference on April 22nd in Terre Haute as we Imagine Rotary. This will be a great time to visit Rotarians from throughout the district and pick up new ideas. In addition, we will be hosting the Inaugural Youth Summit with Interactors and RYLA students joining us to take part in their very own conference. It should be a great time for all!

Thanks again for your service to Rotary.

WE NEED TO TALK

Join us for virtual Conversations that Matter:

How do we create closer ties to our community?
Wednesday, March 8th, 6:30 – 7:30 pm EST

Join in the District CONVERSATION to discuss how to do this on March 8th, virtually, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm EST in the next Conversations that Matter with a deeper dive on DEI! Joining us will be Sigrid Soloman, recognized as a major influence at Wilmington College where she is dean of students, and in the community and in her church. One of her greatest gifts is helping young people become successes so they can impact the world.

Clubs report that when participants have many different perspectives, they come up with ideas and projects that make a bigger impact. If we want a Rotary that's strong, effective, and able to prepare the next generation to lead, we need to make sure more people feel welcome and at home in Rotary, year after year.

BUT…..how do we do that?
JOIN IN THE CONVERSATION and find new ways to do this!

Bedford Rotary Club honors Pat Hutchinson at the 11th Annual Bedford Rotary Toast and Raises funds for John Williams Scholarships

Pat (honoree) and Randy Hutchinson

By Karin Dubois, Youth Committee Chair, Bedford Rotary Club
BEDFORD - FEBRUARY 11, 2023 - The 11th Annual Bedford Rotary Toast honored Pat Hutchinson, a long-time Rotarian and philanthropist who has been part of the Lawrence County community for decades. This annual event raises funds for the John Williams Scholarship and is awarded to Lawrence County high school graduates for college pursuits.

Pat was toasted by many who knew her, which included former honoree, Steve Warren, who met Pat in 1967 when she first arrived in Bedford, and many others: Euretta Griggs, Mike Mosqueda, Barbra Kissell, Dan Bortner (who presented a letter from Bob Bridge), and JoAnna Kai Hackney.

President of the Rotary Clubs, Tracy Bailey, read some of the many comments submitted by people who came to love and know Hutchinson with her involvement with the Bedford Chamber of Commerce, Red Hat Society, Limestone Heritage Festival, and her years as a businesswoman and owner of the Bedford Copy Trolley.

Hutchinson brings Christmas to life with a ribbon cutting on October 1st each year for the 12 Months of Christmas, which is recognizable by the large Santa greeting all to the city square in Bedford.

The festive atmosphere of this evening's event was Christmas-themed since Pat Hutchinson is "The Queen of Christmas". Holiday music wafted through the air as good fellowship and a sumptuous meal, catered by Donna Brumbaugh, was served that consisted of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, dressing, rolls, and desserts to appease any appetite.

The Bedford Rotary invites you to join their organization at the Lawrence County Museum of History on Thursday at noon, or contact them by emailing bedfordrotary47421@gmail.com

Bedford President, Tracy Bailey, presides!

You missed a Great Celebration!!

The Friends of the Foundation event was held in Evansville at the Myraid Brewing Company in Newburgh on Friday, February 24th. We had a FULL HOUSE and Rotarians from around the district AND those in Evansville were able to make new friends and renew friendships with others. It was a LIVELY evening with great food and beverages and our leader, Jessika Hane, the District Foundation Chair, used her best voice (!) to thank everyone for coming and for supporting OUR Foundation.
Wayne Howell, New Albany Rotary Club, was recognized as our newest Paul Harris Society member and many Rotarians were thanked for joining the Polio Plus Society. (Polio Plus Society is a commitment of $100 per year to go to eradicating polio.)

New PHSociety member, Wayne Howell with Jessika Hane and Mandy Lohrum.

Thank you to the Evansville, Evansville Morning, and Evansville@night Rotary Clubs for hosting us! Thank you to District photographer and PDG, Steve LaRoche and Gretchen Ross, District Social Media chair for pictures!!
They KNOW how to throw a party!!

Service Project at District Conference to Help with
Providing Books to ALL K – 6th Graders in Vigo County
For this year's Rotary District Conference Service project, we are requesting that Rotarians bring Elementary age-appropriate books (K-6) with them on Saturday, April 22nd.
This service project will support all K-6th grade elementary school children in Vigo County. The Terre Haute Noon Rotary club has joined up with Bountiful Books to collect, sort and distribute 6000+ books to all elementary students in Vigo County. Bountiful Books is an organization that was born out of the COVID pandemic. Two wonderful students from Indiana State University, Isabella Katz & Paul Wells, began reading to children online during the pandemic. When they reached out to Half Price Books for a donation of children's books, little did they know they would receive many boxes of books. Together with the books collected by Rotarians, these books will be sorted and organized and then will be distributed by Bountiful Books to local schools for their book fairs in the coming week. Each student that attends the book fair leaves with a free book.

Along with Bountiful Books, we will sort and organize the books so each Vigo county Elementary school can have its book drive in the coming weeks.

Now the question is, which club will gather the most books????

Bloomington North Rotary Club helps bring solar power
to a Community Radio Station with the
assistance of District Grant funds.

l to r: Ryan Zaricki, Terry Ohl, Gabe Colman, and Adam Beasley is kneeling

by Gabe Coleman, President, Bloomington North

WFHB Community Radio of Bloomington Indiana to bring solar power to their station! WFHB is the first community radio station of Indiana, and is entirely volunteer driven since 1993.

Rotarian Ryan Zaricki, owner and operator of Whole Sun Designs was able to use his position to offer the project materials at cost, allowing BN Rotary to coordinate a solar system that can be expanded in the future. In fact, WFHB took the opportunity to add additional panels to the project above and beyond the initial grant.

This was a fantastic opportunity for local Rotarians to learn and participate in the practical, literal groundbreaking approach to solar installation, while bringing an environmentally sustainable element to a community resource!

Kari Akin, Evansville Rotary Club,
Selected as District Governor for 2025-2026

by Kirk Bouchie, iPDG

We are very excited to announce that Evansville Rotarian Kari Akin has been selected as our District Governor Nominee by our seven-member selection committee. Kari will be our District Governor in the 2025-2026 Rotary year. Kari currently serves as President of the Evansville Rotary Club and will be our new assistant governor for area 3 this coming Rotary year. Kari has attended several district, zone and RI events, including this past year’s RI convention in Houston, Texas. She has demonstrated great commitment to Rotary since joining in 2016. District Secretary and longtime Evansville Rotarian recently said, “Kari has embraced every Rotary opportunity. She has been a member of the leadership team of our ongoing Yucatan project and traveled to Santa Maria for the dedication of a computer building. She pressed for each of her Rotary colleagues to donate to provide Chromebooks to the recently wired village, moving youth in the community into the age of computer learning.” Kari was selected into Evansville’s community 20 under 40 annual class in 2014. The 20 Under 40 project recognizes top young leaders in the greater Evansville area. Kari is a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Polio Plus Society.

Quote from Kari: : “I am truly honored and excited to be selected as the District Governor Nominee. I consider myself a “Rotarian of the World.” It’s a state of mind and I can’t wait to see District 6580’s impact on the world through connection and collaboration.”
Congratulations, Kari.

Greensburg is making member recruitment FUN
through Membership BINGO

By Alex Sefton, President, Greensburg Rotary Club

Greensburg started Membership Bingo as a way to reach new prospective members in our community. The heart behind it, in addition to member recruitment, is to get people excited to share more about our Rotary Club. We even built in some added perks like gift cards, free meals, and free membership for those who recruit their connections. We’re excited to see where it goes!

Here's how it works:

Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) Builds
Stronger Leaders and Clubs

by Shanon O'Toole, District Governor Elect
Passion led us here! Potential leaders AND anyone who wants to know more about Rotary, take your Rotary knowledge and leadership skills to the next level with Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI). You will build stronger leaders and clubs with Rotary education.

Watch RLIHOA.org for upcoming RLI opportunities.

Feedback from a recent RLI class:
--Content was spot on and timely
--I have already taken one of the ideas back to our board meeting that we discussed during RLI. There were so many ideas that I wrote down and I am looking forward to implementing them.
--I was surprised with the number of clubs that were represented, I liked the variety and input from the different areas. I was surprised at the number of folks that were entering leadership positions that hadn’t had this training
--It was nice having input from a diverse group (age, gender etc..) for perspective and vision.
--I really enjoyed how the group clicked and was able to have really great conversations.
