June 17- Join fellow Rotarians at Nationals Park for End Polio Now Night - June 17th - as the Nationals take on the Marlins! For every ticket sold, $5 will be donated to Rotary International’s PolioPlus campaign.Tickets will be delivered via the MLB Ballpark App and must be accessed using the email address on the purchase. Tickets are not refundable nor can they be resold.

Donations of pool toys, swim goggles, beach towels etc. for "Our Christmas in June" project to supply pool passes and pool supplies to needy area families are being accepted. Please bring your donations to May 17 Happy Hour or First Friday lunch in June or email to arrange drop off.

Paul Harris Fellow Award

Dr. Wayne Allgaier has been selected by our club to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for 2023. Dr. Allgaier is a retired local physician who has cared for many in the Brunswick community over his long career here. He has been a strong leader in various community organizations including BEACON, Brunswick Main Street, and the Brunswick History Commission. He has served on the Brunswick City Council. Smoketown Rotary Club is honored to present this award to him
at our Charter Dinner on May 31.

History Moment: Picturing Women Inventors?

The word “inventor” brings to mind images of men like Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, but inventors come from every demographic and segment of society. The stories of inventive women often have been overlooked, undervalued, and sometimes lost, not least because they have lacked the support and backing necessary to secure patents and develop inventions into marketable products or services. In mid-2019, both houses of Congress held hearings on what lawmakers called the “lost Einsteins,” looking at gender gaps in science, engineering, technology, and invention. Patricia Bath, inventor of a surgical instrument for cataract removal, testified: “The pipeline for increasing women scientists and engineers begins by igniting the spark for learning and curiosity.” Academic research has confirmed the importance of role models in inspiring invention among girls while also pointing out that, at current rates, it will take more than a century to reach gender parity with male inventors. 1 Read More
