DG Lance Year-end Message As my term comes to an end, I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible honor and privilege of service as your District Governor. It has been a truly transformative year filled with remarkable experiences, enduring friendships and inspiring moments that will forever remain etched in my memory.
Together, we embarked on a collective mission to make a lasting impact in our communities, guided by the Four-Way Test and our unwavering commitment to service above self. Throughout this journey, I witnessed the unwavering dedication and passion of our Rotarians who tirelessly worked to bring positive change and empower those in need. It is your tireless efforts that have truly made a difference in the lives of countless individuals.
Our district’s achievements this year are a testament to the extraordinary work we have accomplished together. We successfully launched projects and initiatives that addressed critical needs. Be it promoting literacy, protecting our environment, empowering women, or providing access to healthcare. Our collaborative efforts have left an indelible mark on our communities, creating a ripple effect of positive change that will continue to resonate long after this year.
None of our achievements would have been possible without the immense support and dedication of our district leadership team, club president, committee chairs, and all the Rotarians who selflessly gave their time, skills, and resources. Your unwavering commitment to Rotary’s ideals and your relentless pursuit of service has been truly inspiring.
As I pass the baton to our incoming District Governor, Shanon O’Toole, I have every confidence that the district will continue to flourish under her leadership. Shanon brings a wealth of experience, passion, and a shared vision for the future of Rotary. I am confident that her term will be marked by even greater achievements and continued focus on making a positive impact in our communities.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you. It has been an immense privilege to service as your District Governor, and I am grateful for the trust and support you have placed in me. As I bid farewell to this role, I look forward to continuing my Rotary journey alongside all of you. Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to service.

Incoming District Governor Shanon's message As we begin this new Rotary year, I am grateful, enthusiastic, and feel a deep sense of responsibility. It is an honor and humbling to serve each of you in this role, and I look forward to the journey ahead.
Our District is fortunate to have an amazing network of leaders, cheerleaders, mentors, and friends in Rotary who offer guidance, encouragement, and wisdom. With challenging goals this year, I believe we can achieve them together. My aim is to guide and empower every member of our District to find their potential in Rotary, while fostering a nurturing environment that promotes creativity, positivity, inclusion, and leadership.
This year's theme, "Create Hope in the World," resonates deeply with me. It emphasizes addressing mental health and removing the stigma in asking for help. Mental health affects people globally, including within our communities. We should shine a light on mental health, encourage seeking help, and equip our Rotarians and clubs with resources to raise awareness. Together, we can find solutions. Hope is a powerful force that uplifts and transforms lives, influencing one's outlook and ability to overcome challenges. As Rotarians, we can be ambassadors of hope, making a lasting impact on those in need. By creating hope at every level and fostering well-being, we play a significant role in a world that often lacks hope.
Our "Glow/Grow Rotary" message sparks curiosity and engagement. It represents the glowing a light on the positive impact of Rotary in our communities as well as the phrase, "glowing with hope," that is often used to describe a person with hope. By shining a light on Rotary, we can generate awareness, inspire hope, and amplify our organization's ability to make a difference.
Engaging all our members is crucial. Let's encourage them to learn about Rotary, thrive in our clubs, and share their stories. The more individuals know about our organization, the more driven they will be to create an impact. Recently, we approved all 19 grant requests in our district, focusing on creating hope. This wouldn't have been possible without the support of The Rotary Foundation.
Our District goals include increasing Foundation giving to $150 per person and growing our membership from 1,500 to 1,650. Achieving this requires engaged members. Through district and club training opportunities and events throughout the year, we can foster growth and retention. Save the dates for the district-wide events and the exciting District Conference, where every club can showcase their projects. This year, let's embrace our Rotary theme, "Create Hope in the World." Shine a light on Rotary's incredible work and ensure a positive experience for every Rotarian while expanding our impact.
Remember, people are attracted to things that glow. Let us glow together, grow together, and make a difference through Rotary!

The RI Convention in Melbourne 'did not disappoint'!The Rotary International Convention for 22-23 took place in Melbourne, Australia from May 27 – 31st. Eight Rotarians from District 6580 attended this convention and here some thoughts and highlights from some of those attending:
Sally Gaskill, Bloomington Rotary Club: After being a Rotarian for about a quarter of a century, I finally made it to my first international convention. Wow! It’s something else to be surrounded by like-minded humanitarians from all over the world. I enjoyed taking a deep dive into all things Rotary, and hearing inspiring speakers including Rotary’s own John Hewko.District Dinner at Margs in Melbourne. Kari Akin, Evansville Rotary Club: People ask me “What was the best part of the Rotary International adventure?” and I said, “seeing it through my 18 year old’s eyes”. This year, guests of registered Rotarians were given free passes to attend the House of Friendship. It was great to introduce my son, Nick to the Global Aspect of Rotary as we walked by booths showcasing their projects such as shelter box and pearls with purpose that benefits victims of human trafficking, or meeting at the Peace Tree with other Rotarians from South Africa as we struggled together to follow directions to make the orgami peace cranes. The Ben and Jerry’s at the end of the Peace Tree made it all worth it. Everyone was so friendly to my 6 foot 3” son. They could tell he was younger so they were all asking him questions of what would entice him to join Rotary. We met up with Rotaractors and long-time friend Ignacio who is the International Rotaract Public Image Chair to show Nick some fun in his age group. Having previously taken Nick to 3rd World countries, he was so impressed with the cleanliness, friendliness, safety, and modernization of Melbourne, especially its transit system. The International Convention is always an amazing time and the Rotarians you meet is what makes it so worth it! Historic train depot in Melbourne. Everything was lit up to celebrate the Aboriginal Culture for the awareness month. Matt Millies, New Albany Rotary Club: "Melbourne was my first Rotary International Convention, and it did not disappoint. Everything from the venues, to the presenters, to the House of Fellowship exceeded my expectations. It was wonderful to meet so many fellow Rotarians from around the world and exchange ideas. I cannot wait for my next opportunity to attend a Rotatory International Convention." Steve Freeman, Greensburg Rotary Club: The Rotary International Convention in Melbourne was a great experience with over 14,000 Rotarians from around the world in attendance. You get a real understanding of the global impact of Rotary when you attend an International Convention and Melbourne was no exception. We were able to attend both general sessions, which had impactful speakers, along with a message from current RI President Jennifer Jones. We also enjoyed our time at the House of Friendship. I’m looking forward to the next 2024 RI Convention in Singapore.” .jpg) , Rotarians Aly Kaylor from Bloomington, and Jeffery Berger and Kari from Evansville on an eco safari with background. Singapore awaits: Next year’s international convention. Make plans now!! The Rotary convention is where friendship and learning come together to inspire you. In Singapore you’ll connect with people of action from around the globe at Rotary’s biggest event of the year. We’ll share fresh perspectives, inspiration, and hope – with each other and the world! The convention features world-class dining and cultural attractions, distinguished speakers, energizing breakout sessions, and much more. Join us 25-29 May 2024 in Singapore where we’ll be Sharing Hope With the World! |

Rotary Foundation awards $40,000 scholarship to Megan Gearhart
.png/Megan(1)__295x320.png) by Jim Bright, District Global Scholar Chair
The Rotary Foundation has awarded a Global Grant Scholarship of $40,000 to Megan Gearhart, who plans to pursue an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master of Global Development Policy from three universities in Europe. Megan is from Roanoke, Indiana.
Megan graduated from IU in May 2023 with majors in International Studies and in Recreation (Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management) and was selected over three other finalists by Rotary District 6580, which includes 35 clubs in southern Indiana. The Bloomington Rotary Club is her sponsor.
During the two-year program, Megan will complete coursework at Palacký University (Olomouc, Czech Republic), University of Clermont Auvergne (Clermont-Ferrand, France), and the University of Pavia (Pavia, Italy). With a focus on peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Megan’s career goals involve working in an organization where she can help communities, governments and organizations create sustainable growth plans and policies that balance economic considerations with the environment.
“I look forward to furthering my education in a way that combines my passion for helping people with generating solutions that maintain the values of communities and cultures,” said Megan. “This is an opportunity to learn about policy analysis and international development from not only different perspectives, but also different cultures through other students and the faculty at each university.”
Megan’s passion for Rotary -- and her seven years of experience in the organization -- “tipped the scales” in her favor, said committee chair, Jim Bright. “In high school Megan was a Rotary Youth Exchange student in Taiwan and, at IU, she was a co-founder and President of the Indiana University-Bloomington Rotaract Club. She also has embraced RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) as a participant and as a volunteer leader, and has pursued programs that focus on positive peace and DEI.”
Megan, District 6580’s sixth Global Grant Scholar, expects to leave for the Czech Republic in late August 2023. Her host club there is the Rotary Club of Olomouc-City.
Previous Global Grant Scholars:
