July 24: What’s Up? Our August Prairie Sky

There are quite a few things one can see in the sky in late July and August. Dave Leake will talk about what’s happening and how you can see it, plus get you ready for two upcoming total eclipses!

Dave retired from Parkland College in 2019 after 30 years of service to the community as a physics/astronomy instructor and giving presentations under the dome of the William M. Staerkel Planetarium. He was the planetarium director from 2000 to 2019. Dave is the founder and current president of the Champaign-Urbana Astronomical Society and keeps busy by writing a weekly skywatching column for the News Gazette, recording a weekly “Eye on the Sky” segment for radio, and doing some evening DJ work on WKIO.

NOTE: This meeting is expected to take place in-person at the Holiday Inn Champaign. It will also be offered online, via Zoom.

Hosting Yanai Ambassador

By Douglas Nelson

For many years, the Champaign Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Yanai Japan have had a student exchange program. This summer, we helped send Ethan Anderson, a student at the University of Illinois who grew up in Champaign, to Yanai. In return, the Yanai Rotary club is sending a student who will arrive in Champaign August 15th and stay until September 5th.

Keisuke Seyama is a third-year medical student at the University of Yamaguchi. He is hoping to learn more about American culture and lifestyle and share his own experiences of life in Yanai. Like Ethan, who was a fabulous ambassador, Keisuke seems enthusiastic, curious, and excited to learn and share life with host families. He would also love the chance to visit Chicago during his stay, as well as learn more about the practice of medicine in Champaign-Urbana.

Ideally, Keisuke would stay with several host families from Champaign Rotary, each for three to four days. He will arrive on August 15 and begin his stay with Janet and Doug Nelson. If you cannot host, we are also looking for volunteers to take Keisuke to dinner or to an event you are attending. The more people he meets, the richer his experience. Please email Doug Nelson (doug@nmtmidwest.com) and he will put together a schedule. Thank you for continuing this rich tradition of exchange which was begun by Kimiko and Ken Gunji. Ken was a Past District Governor and long-time member and past president of Champaign Rotary.
