August Cup: C-U Special Recreation

Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation (CUSR) was formed through a cooperative agreement with the Champaign and Urbana Park Districts to provide recreation programs and leisure services for residents with disabilities. Inclusion and specialized programs are available.
We provide quality recreation programs for people with disabilities by hiring and training qualified staff, providing staff ratios which ensure program safety and success, and adapting programs and equipment to meet the needs of the participants.

Meet Our New Member: Andia Isaj

By Lauren Gramly on Sunday, August 13, 2023
Andia Isaj is from Tirana, Albania. She works in the Human Resources Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign providing clerical support to the Talent Acquisition and Testing Sections. She is responsible for posting Academic Professional and Faculty job postings. She creates and maintains job postings on external websites, such as Higher Education Recruitment Consortium, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Indeed. She also coordinates the pre-employment screening process for staff and personnel new hires with Carle Foundation Hospital. Andia is working on a Master of Public Administration with a certificate in Non-Profit Organization Management at the University of Illinois at Springfield. She taught foreign languages and cultural understanding in English and Spanish in her hometown and can also speak, comprehend, and interpret Italian and French. Andia loves travel and literature and is learning to garden and paint. She relaxes by watching movies and spending time outdoors, walking, hiking, or tanning at the seaside (when not in Illinois!). She volunteers as a teacher’s aide with Urbana Adult Education by assisting in teaching English to the Hispanic minority community and assisting with U.S. citizenship and naturalization learning classes for the Hispanic and French Congo community. She enjoys working with the immigrant community by facilitating opportunities she wished she had been given when she moved to the United States. Andia and her fiance, Jeffrey Rogers, live in Champaign.

Hosting Yanai Ambassador

By Douglas Nelson

For many years, the Champaign Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Yanai Japan have had a student exchange program. This summer, we helped send Ethan Anderson, a student at the University of Illinois who grew up in Champaign, to Yanai. In return, the Yanai Rotary club is sending a student who will arrive in Champaign August 15th and stay until September 5th.

Keisuke Seyama is a third-year medical student at the University of Yamaguchi. He is hoping to learn more about American culture and lifestyle and share his own experiences of life in Yanai. Like Ethan, who was a fabulous ambassador, Keisuke seems enthusiastic, curious, and excited to learn and share life with host families. He would also love the chance to visit Chicago during his stay, as well as learn more about the practice of medicine in Champaign-Urbana.

Ideally, Keisuke would stay with several host families from Champaign Rotary, each for three to four days. He will arrive on August 15 and begin his stay with Janet and Doug Nelson. If you cannot host, we are also looking for volunteers to take Keisuke to dinner or to an event you are attending. The more people he meets, the richer his experience. Please email Doug Nelson (doug@nmtmidwest.com) and he will put together a schedule. Thank you for continuing this rich tradition of exchange which was begun by Kimiko and Ken Gunji. Ken was a Past District Governor and long-time member and past president of Champaign Rotary.
