goal, $4 million, was beaten - 101% ($4,042,022.); DAVE BOUGH ("JC" picture) and BETTY NELSON, quoted in article regarding Rotary's involvement with Village Banking Project in the Philippines; DOUG BRANIGIN
("Leader" and "JC" pictures) honored with the Sagamore of the Wabash award, presented by Rep. Sheila Klinker on behalf of Gov. Frank O'Bannon, for supportive effort of the St. Elizabeth Medical

LAWRENCE TEDER introduced Dr. Suellen Reed, a Rushville Rotarian and Superintendent, Indiana
Department of Education, who made a most interesting presentation. Dr. Reed noted that the most frequently asked question of her is, "How are we doing?" And she proceeded to answer that question for
Rotarians/Kiwanians with some "good news" (IN one of top nine, nationally, in math and science; high school graduation rate is 88% - highest ever; attendance rate is 96% - highest ever; 45% of students taking
a foreign language which is a "gatekeeper" course to indicate who will be going on to college; 12 - 16% graduating from academic honors program with 47 credits; and IN is 3rd, nationally, fastest improving
State) and 'bad news" (need to work harder in math; not reaching the 12% who are not graduating - need to realize that the high school diploma is !he bare minimum needed; and need to work toward better connection
between high school and after high school). Dr. Reed closed by indicating that (1) What we do for best (students), we do for the rest (students); (2) Teachers need to bring out the very best of all students; and (3)
Schools cannot do the job by themselves, need help from everyone, including everyone in attendance at the meeting today - we must do everything possible to develop the potential of these students.
INVOCATION by DAN
HEMAN, singing led by SUSAN SMITH, and Rotary piano by HARLEY FREY.
