JIM CARNEY introduced Jerry Bean, Tippecanoe County Prosecutor, Jerry Bean who made a presentation about bad checks. Mr. Bean noted that there are 50 to 75 bad checks claims filed each week; Smallness of the amount is not a factor, usually when the amount is over $150.00 or individual has written seven bad checks, individual referred to a “divergent program” administered by Family Services, Inc.; Divergent program consists mainly of restitution, “bad check school”, and the payment of a $50.00 file fee; A list of convicted bad check writers is available from the Prosecutor’s office; and Low level misdemeanors are handled outside law enforcement through Community Corrections, higher level misdemeanors and lesser felonies are placed in local jail, and greater felonies are forwarded to the Department of Corrections. He then opened the meeting for a Q and A session.
