Donald C. Johnson, Judge, Superior Court #1, Tippecanoe County, will speak on the “Criminal Justice System.” Judge Johnson will be introduced by WALT VALENTINE, Program Coordinator for the month of September.

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - LAURIE BROSE, 11:00 to 11:40 a.m., and STEVE HICKMAN, 11:40 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Greeters - GERARD BENNER and DENNIS CARSON; Invocation - JIM HANKS; and Music - NICK CLARK.

CLUB CONCERNS and FAMILY NEWS: President GENE COURTANEY (President GENE) noted that BOB ADAMS had a set back, fell again at home and will be a little longer recovering; LARRY GRAHAM able to be in the office a little longer each day; and JOHN OSMUN had surgery last Wednesday, August 18, 1999 and had five aneurysms repaired, DICK KOHLS reported that JOHN seem to be getting along fine when he visited him at the hospital, and after Rotary today, JIM HANKS reported that JOHN would be returning to the healthcare unit of Westminster Village tomorrow, Wednesday, August 25th. President GENE requested members to remember BOB, LARRY, and JOHN, as well as LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; BOB HIATT; BEV STONE; and MARJORIE WALKER, spouse of DICK, in their thoughts and prayers.

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY to the family of HUGH STEELE who died at 7:25 a.m., Wednesday, August 18, 1999, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center; he never recovered from his hip replacement surgery on July 15, 1999. HUGH had been an active member of the Club for 38 years, joined on September 5, 1961; had 282 months (23 -1/2 years) of 100% attendance as of July 1999; was Club President in 1960-61; was a Paul Harris Fellow; and a supporter of the Lafayette Foundation at the Golden Service level. DICK GRIPE will offer an eulogy in honor of HUGH at the Club meeting on Tuesday, August 31st.

CORRESPONDENCE from DICK WALKER...We have not decided when we will return, but I hope it will be in time for the Notre Dame game...MARJORIE is improving and is now walking with a cane rather than a walker and is doing well in cardiac rehab which she will continue when we return to West Lafayette...I hope all goes well with everyone, we send our greetings to all.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT, Carlo Ravizza, is coming to Indianapolis Airport Holiday Inn, Friday, September 24, 1999, reception at 6:00 p.m., dinner at 7:00 p.m., and address by President Carlo at 8:00 p.m. GRIFF has reservation form; must be in by Friday, September 3rd.

GLOBAL FEST - CELEBRATING OUR CULTURES, will be held again this year at Morton Community Center, Friday and Saturday, September 3 and 4, 1999. VOLUNTEERS are needed to host at Rotary’s booth; two-hour shifts from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m., Friday, and 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION WALK - 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 19, 1999, Riehle Plaza: FRED KUIPERS requesting sign-up of sponsors and walkers for this community project. Sign-up sheets will be on luncheon tables for the next three Tuesdays.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY for Rotarians to help Junior Achievement (JA); JA looking for help with their sixth annual Night Golf Classic. It will be Tuesday, August 31, 1999 at the Ravines. It was very hectic at the Club meeting today; therefore, it was extremely difficult to record other spouses and/or guests. President GENE introduced Jim Vruggink, Purdue Athletic Relations Director, who noted that public high school football coaches had not been invited this year. Gordon Straley, long time Kiwanian and West Lafayette High School football coach, had been in charge of the invitations, but upon his death this had not been done. Joe Tiller Jim requested that anyone interested in doing this in future years should contact him. President GENE then introduced Rotarian MORGAN BURKE who noted that Volleyball Coach Jeff Hulsmeyer would not be speaking today as his wife was currently at one of the hospitals giving birth to their first child, and then introduced Football Coach Joe Tiller who made a most enjoyable presentation.
