NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE
There is no Club meeting on Tuesday, October 12th. Rotary will be meeting as a part of the Greater Lafayette Area Service Club and Community Organizations meeting on Thursday, October 14th - opportunity for a make up. This is an effort, as when Coach Joe Tiller, Purdue’s football coach, spoke to this group in August, to continue the tradition of having the Purdue coaches available as guest speakers and also an attempt to help the coaches with their hectic schedules. On Thursday, October 14th, Coaches Gene Keady (men’s basketball) and Kristy Curry (women’s basketball) will address this meeting same price ($7.00) and same time as regular Club meetings, Grand Ballroom, University Inn. GRIFF needs to make a guarantee; therefore, check with spouses, friends, etc., and be ready to provide a count at next Tuesday’s meeting.

WALT VALENTINE introduced John E. Bell,
Special Agent in Charge, FBI, IP. Mr. Bell is in charge of the Indianapolis office which encompasses the state of IN, made a most interesting presentation regarding the scope of the FBI’s work in IN and description of some of the new techniques in criminal investigations that are now available. Mr. Bell noted that: The Indianapolis office is a medium sized one (IN ranks 14th in population, yet the office ranks 34th in number of staff members) with many agents being sent from IN to the southwest to deal with the drug traffic crossing the border there. And, stressed that this has been a benefit, since for many years the FBI was a “take, take” organization (shared/worked very little with State and local law enforcement agencies), but since the mid-80s this shortage of agents has led to a “partnered up” cooperation with State and local law agencies, i.e., forming multi-agency task forces to deal with crime. He indicated that there are some 11 such multi-agency/partnering up task forces operating in IN, i.e., one in Gary where they have seen a dramatic decline in crime; Another which utilized the IN National Guard where after crack houses were cleared, the National Guard came in and leveled the houses; Safe streets from fugitives task force - pursue fugitives when local agencies could afford staff and time to do this; Drug task forces in Indianapolis, Evansville, and Fort Wayne; Indianapolis gang problems task force; etc. Mr. Bell spent the balance of the time telling about funding of a new FBI laboratory and the new computerized programs that are helping fight crime throughout the nation.
COLLECTORS: JIM CARNEY, and GENE HILLS; Greeting by JIM FENN; Invocation by GORDON KINGMA; Singing led by BOB GRIFFITHS; Rotary piano by REX KEPLER; and Free Meals Drawing - LORNA MYERS and TERRY WEST.
