DEEPEST SYMPATHY to the family of JOE SICER who died at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, March 23, 2000, at St. AnthonyHealth Care. JOE would have been 98 years old on June 11th. He had been a Rotarian in Jeffersonville from 1927 -1942 and a member of the Lafayette Club upon moving to become a staff member at Purdue; he was an active Rotarian for 71 years. He was a constant financial
contributor to the Club (supporting the many Club activities), the Lafayette Rotary Foundation (contributor at the Double Diamond Level, i.e., $10,000.00 or more), The Rotary International Foundation (holder of three Paul Harris Fellow recognitions), and a Benefactor of the Permanent Fund of The Rotary International Foundation. In fact, as recently as Tuesday, October 6, 1998, JOE at the age of 96, was the Club’s speaker, addressing the Club on “Why A Career In The Poultry Industry - Plus A Few Reflections On Other Happenings That Have Affected My Life Through 96 Years.” He contributed to Rotary in many many ways and will be greatly missed.
THANKS to JIM FOSTER for reading an outstanding eulogy to JOE; eulogy was put together by BOB HOGUE, MARK RUSSELL, and JIM. Copies are available from GRIFF.
MARGERY ISMAIL (“Leader” picture) latest Rotarian to be featured as a “Lafayette Leader” in the series of articles by Lillian Price. A most interesting article about MARGERY and her many accomplishments.
BOB BROCK at Rotary today, it was good to see him. BOB wanted all to know that he appreciated the beautiful azalea plant sent while in the hospital and that the cards, visits, and phone calls all helped his spirits during recovery time.
MARV PHILLIPS, according to BETTY NELSON, has moved to 122 Westview Circle, West Lafayette 47906-1600.
DICK SMITH back from Santa Fe, NM and at Rotary today. DICK has been performing with the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra and for a month with the State of New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, Albuquerque, which visited and performed at Indian reservations (supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Symphony League of Albuquerque). DICK, in full dress, tux that is, would visit the performance site a day early, pass out batons, and demonstrate to the children how to direct.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: -
ROTARY INFORMATION SESSION (Session): Another Session, 11:00 a.m. prior to a regular Club meeting and conducted by JERRY MC CARTHY, Membership and Information Committee, is being arranged. All prospective members must attend such a Session. One of the following Tuesdays, April 4th, April 11th, or April 25th is being considered; therefore, if you are considering the sponsorship of a new member, please contact GRIFF. -
PLEASE HELP SELL and PURCHASE TICKETS to the “SINGING FOR GREATER LAFAYETTE”, a cooperative effort on the part of Rotary and the Purdue Musical Organizations (PMO), to raise money for the Long Center Restoration Project (Project). This event will feature the six units of PMO (Purdue Varsity Glee Club, Purduettes, PMO Express, University Choir, Purdue Bell Choir, and PMO Kids Choir)
presenting a 90-minute, no intermission, performance at 7:30 p.m., (not 8:00 p.m.) Saturday, April 8th, at the Long Center
For The Performing Arts (Long Center). -
JIM HANKS, Co-Chair, stated today, “If anyone needs another example of how
great Lafayette Rotarians really are, is that before there had been a decision by the Club to sponsor a benefit for the Long Center
Restoration Project (Project), 51 Rotarians had already donated $257,000.00, including the Foundation’s $25,000.00 gift.
And, here I stand ten days away from the April 8th benefit with the temerity to ask you for one last effort, one more vigorous
act in support of the Project. As I pondered what I should say today on behalf of the Club’s April 8th sponsorship of
the benefit for the Project, I found myself wishing for the wit of MAURI WILLLIAMSON, the enthusiasm of BOB VERPLANK, the
thoroughness of BETTY NELSON, the persuasiveness of BOB GRIFFITHS, and the sincerity of GENE COURTANEY.
Mostly what I have come up with is this simple, earnest hope, couched as a plea: PLEASE HELP! We need you.
We need you to buy tickets. We need you to sell tickets.” Selling out the 1200-seat Long Center could raise in excess
of $20,000.00 for this very worthwhile Project.
