Volume 84, Number 39 – April 4, 2000

Chuck Herber, Journalism Teacher, Jefferson High School, and Advisor to the “Booster”, Jefferson High School student newspaper, will be the speaker. Program to be about the W. Curtis Hostetter Journalism Scholarships which is a part of the Campership Program administered by the Vocational Project Committee, JEFF DARLING, Chair. Mr. Herber hopes to have a recipient of a past journalism scholarship with him to assist with the presentation. Mr. Herber will be introduced by TOM SCHMIDT, Program Coordinator for the month of April.

For the past few years, approximately $4,100.00 has been made available from Club and Lafayette Foundation funds to the Vocational Projects Committee for the Campership Program. These funds come from two sources, one source is as follows: In 1921, when Edgar Goldsberry was President of the Club, a piece of land along the Wildcat Creek was set aside for the development of Rotary Park, which was to be used for camping purposes; the experience was intended for the youth of Tippecanoe County. Rotary Park had a long history of serving the youth in Tippecanoe County. The ugly head of vandalism appeared and took its toll, and as a result on November 30, 1977, the property was sold for $25,000.00. As a part of selling Rotary Park there was a stipulation that the principal, $25,000.00, remain intact with only the interest earned from the investment to be utilized for camperships. And, that one of the camperships should be in the area of journalism and designated The W. Curtis Hostetter Scholarship/Campership (Curtis Hostetter was for many years the Owner/Publisher of the “Lafayette Leader”, President of the Club - 1946-47, District Governor - 1958-59, and Secretary of the Club for 25 years). It was noted that the principal could be added to, and recently the Foundation Board added funds to the $25,000.00 in order to increase the amount of interest (for past few years has been approximately $2,100.00) available from the Foundation for camperships. The second source is: The Club has approximately $33,000.00 invested through Merrill Lynch which generates approximately $2,000.00 in interest each year for the Campership Program.

CORRECTION: DALE MC HENRY should have been listed under Golden Plus Contributors (Contributor of $2,500.00 or more but less than $5,000.00) in the Annual Dinner Program. If there were other errors, please contact GRIFF.

PRESIDENT GENE received the following letter from BETTY DOVERSBERGER, Chancellor, Ivy Tech State College...Thank you for your support of the Rotary Vocational Scholarships. The Rotary Club is doing another great service through these scholarships. The benefits these scholarships bring goes far beyond the financial assistance they provide to the students, as important as that is. Many vocational students enter higher education without much family support for their efforts and with many self-doubts. The affirmation that others think they are worthy of support goes a long way in bolstering their courage and resolve. As they pursue their education, they are also setting an example for their children and encouraging the next generation to also value higher education. The entire community will benefit as a result...Our students felt very honored by the way in which the scholarships were presented. Thank you for all you did to make the event something they will treasure forever.
