Volume 84, Number 40 – April 11, 2000

This will be the Annual Scholarship & Citizenship Award Day (Award Day) honoring two outstanding seniors, one female and one male, from each of the five Tippecanoe County High Schools - Central Catholic, Harrison, Jefferson, McCutcheon, and West Lafayette. Ten scholarships will be awarded: (1) $1,000.00 Frank K. Burrin Memorial Scholarship; (2) $1,000.00 Eric A. Holm Memorial Scholarship; and (3) Eight - $500.00 Thomas F. Moran, Sr. Memorial Scholarships. Frank K. Burrin was a Past President of the Club (1969-70) and the Rotarian most responsible for starting the Lafayette Rotary Foundation which funds the scholarships. Eric A. Holm was a Past President of the Club (1975-76) and the Rotarian responsible for starting this scholarship and citizenship recognition program. Thomas F. Moran, Sr. was the first President of the Lafayette Rotary Club (1916-17) and grandfather and great grandfather of Rotarians TOM MORAN, Past President (1990-91) - 75th Anniversary of the Club, and KATHY MEEKS. Invited guests of the Club will be parents of the honored seniors; high school principals, guidance counselors; and superintendents of four school corporations. There will be no speaker - the program will be devoted to recognition of these seniors. MARK RUSSELL, Chair, and BARB HANSEN, Vice Chair, will be in charge of the Award Day.

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - ERNIE POLAND, 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. and LEW RUNNELS, 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Greeter - RAY KAVANAUGH; Invocation - JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER; and Music - KATHY MEEKS.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President GENE COURTANEY (President GENE) requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: HOWARD DOSTER, spouse of BARB; LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; BOB HIATT; SANDY PEARLMAN; MARV PHILLIPS; and BEV STONE.

JOHN MC KEE and spouse, EUDORA, have sort of been ailing lately. JOHN, a former District Governor (1960-61), has been a Rotarian for 61 years; joined in Washington (1939), later joined the Attica-Williamsport Club, and transferred to this Club in 1985. JOHN has visited Clubs in 46 countries and been to 11 International Conventions - how’s that for commitment to Rotary!

LARRY LANE has been in FL for several days having his left knee operated on again; it was good to see LARRY at Rotary today.

President GENE noted that the Club had received a Service Award certificate from the Tippecanoe County Health Department for the Club’s commitment and dedication to make the March 14th “Shots Not Spots Clinic” a success.

President GENE noted last Tuesday that Christine Mott, daughter of STEVE, has been offered appointments to both the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • CLUB BOARD OF DIRECTORS at their meeting last night voted NOT TO HAVE A CLUB MEETING ON TUESDAY, JULY 4TH; change of administration to occur on Tuesday, July 11th.

  • PLEASE NOTE: On Tuesday, April 25th, JIM HANKS will give a report about the “Singing For Greater Lafayette” activity that was held Saturday, April 8th, at the Long Center For The Performing Arts for the Long Center Restoration Project, in addition there will be special music from Purdue Musical Organizations (PMO). This will be in addition to the normal program; therefore, President GENE will ring the bell to convene at 12:00 p.m. rather than the usual 12:10.

  • PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS GATHERING: The Rotary Club of Indianapolis is extending an invitation for all Paul Harris Fellows to gather at noon, Wednesday, May 10th, St. Vincent Martin House, 1801 West 86th Street (enter on the south end), Indianapolis. Cost of the meal is $15.00 per person. The program will include information about The Rotary International Foundation and a special visitor, Randy Montgomery, who is a writer for the Tonight Show’s Jay Leno and the syndicated Bob & Tom Show. Registration deadline is Wednesday, May 3rd, if interested, contact GRIFF.

  • CRAWFORDSVILLE ROTARY CLUB is offering Rotarians an opportunity to meet and create some District 6560 connections, have a great meal out-of-doors, and enjoy 18 holes of golf at their Annual Golf Scramble on Wednesday, May 17th, at the Crawfordsville Country Club. If interested, GRIFF has entry forms and additional specific information.

MEMBERSHIP PROPOSALS: JERRY MC CARTHY conducted a new member Rotary Information Session (Session) today, all prospective members must attend a Session to learn more about Rotary in order to better decide whether to become a member. Four candidates were in attendance and expressed an interest in becoming members of the Club, they are: James Buescher, retired from Alcoa, Inc., sponsor HANS NAUMANN; Faye Cole, Owner, Lafayette Relocation Services, and John Fisher, Director of Sales, Holiday Inn, sponsor GRIFF; and Dan Taylor, Owner, new miniature golf course near Meijer Inc. to open later this month, sponsor, JERRY COLE. If no written objections are received within seven days and Rotary committee selection sheets are completed, Jim, Faye, John, and Dan are eligible for introduction on or after April 25th.

APRIL BIRTHDAY TABLE: BOB FEUER, Chair, April Birthday Table, announced last week that Rotarians with birthdays in April had contributed in excess of $1,700.00 to the Lafayette and International Foundations.

MAKE UPS: DICK GRACE, aboard the M/S Norwegian Dream (two times), DICK noted that it was a great trip to several Caribbean ports; LARRY LANE, Maitland (four times) and Winter Park Breakfast (three times), FL; RALPH MORRIS, Sarasota Keys, FL; LAWRENCE TEDER, Sanibel-Captiva, FL; and MAURI WILLIAMSON, Hagerstown.

VISITING ROTARIANS: Craig Lysinger, Daybreak.

VISITORS: James Buescher, Faye Cole, John Fisher, and Dan Taylor, noted under “Membership Proposals”; Gary Suisman (Publisher, Journal and Courier), guest of DICK HOLTZ; Bob Modlin (Retired dentist), guest of BILL HATFIELD; and Suzie Coles (Photographer and Interim Director, Tippecanoe Arts Federation), guest of HANS NAUMANN.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: Amanda Pitner and Rob Suter, guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by TERRY WEST. TERRY presented certificates of recognition, and President GENE presented information brochures about Ambassadorial Scholarships for future reference and Rotary Travel mugs (4-Way Test on them) to Amanda and Rob.

TOM SCHMIDT introduced Chuck Herber, Journalism Teacher, and Advisor to the “Booster”, Chuck Herber Jefferson High School student newspaper, who in turn introduced Jonathan Fulkerson, student Editor-in-Chief of the “Booster”. Both remarked how beneficial the W. Curtis Hostetter Journalism Scholarships (one week seminars at Indiana University) have been to them. Jonathan indicated that it had benefited him in two ways: (1) Learned of new techniques and technology (“Booster” now completely computerized); and (2) Able to interact with other journalism students.
