NELLIE LECHMAN introduced Todd Wetzel, Director, Convocations and Lectures, Purdue University, who made a most interesting presentation. He noted that: Convos will present 30-35
touring/professional performing arts events each year; Began as a committee around 1902-3 and will celebrate a centenary observance in 2002-3; Has grown to a $1.3 million program with
eight full-time and two part-time employees; and will participate in 10-15 outreach and arts education activities with local schools each year. Mr. Wetzel then discussed trends in the arts and entertainment industry
that have impact: (1) Consolidation of commercial promoters into large corporations changed programming decisions from local to regional and/or national; (2) Move
toward total venue ownership; (3) Downward trend in subscriptions purchased (down from 60% in 1990 to 30% in 2000); value of subscriptions allows savings on
promotion and allows popular performance to carry the important, but less commercially viable events; and (4) Increase in artist fees. Mr. Wetzel closed by
citing economic impact from the arts: (1) Generates approximately $4.00 in revenue through restaurant, hotel, retail sales, advertising, etc. for every $1.00 spent; (2)
Leverage for recruiting; (3) Most frequently cited reasons to invest are to enhance the quality of life in communities; stimulate the local economy; attract visitors to the
area; provide entertainment experiences for employees and the community; and increases the value of commercial and residential real estate by making the overall community a more desirable place to live.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first issues of "Ripples" using Rotary's new computer. While most of my past 35 years have been in continuing education, I feel that you
can teach "old dogs new tricks"; however, this new computer makes it a certainty that it takes much longer. Griff. |
