CLUB CONCERNS

Prior to the invocation today, President DAN TEDER (President DAN) requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: YB HALL; BOB HIATT; JOHN MC KEE; BEV STONE; and DICK and MARJORIE WALKER, as reported by BOB GRIFFITHS, are selling their home in Lakeside, OH, and moving into an extended care facility, DICK indicated that he wanted to remain a member of the Club and would be visiting from time to time; and HARLAND WHITE, as reported by PARKIE PARKHUST, taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday, September 16th, with an angina problem.

STEVE THOMPSON, President, Lafayette Rotary Foundation, with assistance from President DAN, recognized and presented Foundation contribution awards to: BRUCE OWENS - Diamond contributors level plaque (Those having given $5,000.00 or more), and to JIM EMERSON; JIM FOSTER; OSCAR HOPKINS; DON GENTRY; CORKY MITCHELL and RAY PEETERS - Golden Service contributors level certificates and special name badges (Those having given $1,000.00 or more).

 

CONGRATULATIONS to MARIAN MILLER ("Leader" picture), spouse of BILL J., who became the latest member of the Rotary family to be featured as a "Lafayette Leader" in the series of articles by Lillian Price. A most interesting article about MARIAN's background, family, and her involvement in community affairs.

THANKS to LEW RUNNELS, Chair, Community Service Projects Committee activity (Breakfast and bingo for senior citizens at Hanna Community Center, this morning, September 19th) and Rotarians JOHN CARPENTER; FAYE COLE; JERRY COLE; STEPHANIE HYATT; and FRANCIS PRITSCHER who exemplified "Service Above Self" by assisting with the breakfast and bingo.

KAE MOORE has accepted the position of Vice President for the Campaign, Florida State University, effective November 1, 2000. KAE has been a Rotarian since February 2. 1988, and is Senior Director, Community Avenue of Service.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

BRUCE OWENS announced a new procedure that is hoped will stimulate "Club Fellowship" by persuading/encouraging members to set at tables with different Rotarians rather than the same ones each Club meeting. Next Tuesday, September 26th, each Rotary badge will have a colored circle on it, ten different colored circles will be used, and tables will have cards with these colors on them. It is hoped that you will sit at the table with the same color designation as your badge. Please give this a try!

District 6560's 2000-2001 Group Study Exchange (GSE) is with District 4590, Sao Paulo, BRAZIL and needs the following personnel: (1) Team Leader: Rotarian experienced and well informed on U.S.A.; Rotary; and the International Foundation; Good leadership qualities, and Decisiveness, ability to analyze situations, a willingness to act when necessary, good interpersonal skills, good health and able to withstand the rigors of a highly active, month-long stay in a foreign country�application deadline October 1st, interviews October 7th and (2) Four young non-Rotary professionals: Employed on a full-time basis in a recognized business or profession for a minimum of two years; Must be between 25 and 40 years of age; and a resident of District 6560 and a citizen of the U. S. - application deadline October 7th, interviews October 21st. If you know of someone who might be interested, GRIFF has application forms.

ROTARIANS CONSIDERING PROPOSAL OF A NEW MEMBER  The Rotary Education & Information Committee will be conducting another Information Session on Tuesday, September 26th, (Session conducted by BRUCE OWENS and JANE TURNER) at 11:00 a.m. in the Tailgate Lounge (across from the Registration Desk) University Inn Conference Center and Suites.

PROGRAM (September 19, 2000)

NELLIE LECHMAN introduced Anne Harrigan, who has been the Music Director and Conductor, Lafayette, Symphony Orchestra (LSO) for the past seven years, resides in Grand Rapids, Ml with spouse and daughter, and also conducts the Baltimore, MD Chamber Orchestra, which she established. Ms. Harrigan made a most interesting presentation regarding: (1) LSO's Golden Anniversary Year's year long celebration, brochures were on tables; and (2) LSO's history: Thomas E. Wilson, Purdue faculty member started the orchestra in 1951 and was conductor until 1958; 1958-1978 - Renato Pacini, Assistant Conductor and Concertmaster, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra was conductor; 1978-1993 - Eduardo Ostergren was conductor and originator of "Stars and Stripes", an expanded education program with "Symphony on the Go", Quartet in Schools, began paying musicians, and formation of LSO Foundation in 1982; and 1993 - present - Anne Harrigan has been conductor and accomplished raising the level of the orchestra's performance and musician compensation, particularly in-town musicians by 650%, leveled the compensation between in-town and out-of-town (Chicago and Indianapolis), focused on strategic arts partnerships and broadening the types of artists presented, scholarships, and future plans to include an alliance with a newly formed youth orchestra and cable television production of Lollipop Concert. Ms. Harrigan closed by recognizing several Rotarians who have been extremely prominent in the success of the LSO and LSO Foundation.

JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: Laura Ertmer and Jeff Casey, guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by STEVE MOTT. President DAN presented certificates of recognition and Rotary travel mugs (Four-Way Test on them) to Laura and Jeff. Information brochures about Ambassadorial Scholarships for future reference will be mailed to them.
