PROGRAM (October 24, 2000)

TOM ROBINSON introduced MARTIN JISCHKE, 10th President, Purdue University, who made a most interesting presentation. President JISCHKE noted that Purdue benefits from the Greater Lafayette community in that the quality of life assists with the recruitment and retention of quality students and faculty; community individuals step forward to assist Purdue (cited David Ross as an example); and the direct and indirect interaction with the community is beneficial to both. He stressed that Purdue's central mission is to play a major and specific role in IN's economy, i.e., be the engine that drives the economy by assisting with problem solving; stimulate new opportunities; and invigorate manufacturing which provides 32% of jobs in IN. President JISCHKE indicated that Purdue's number one priority is to educate students to become leaders and cited statistics to indicate that education clearly aids earning power. He noted that education changes lives of people and cited examples of research work being done at Purdue which is now and will in the future affect our quality of life; President JISCHKE noted that this is the land grant distinction, i.e., discoveries out of labs into all parts of the State to improve the quality of life. President JISCHKE closed by stating that it was the genuine desire to take Purdue to the next level of excellence by recruiting the top and most capable students and increase research which will have impact on IN business, industry, and management.
