UPCOMING PROGRAM (November 14, 2000)

Herbert A. Pigman, Past General Secretary, Rotary International (RI), will be the speaker. As General Secretary from 1979 to 1986, Mr. Pigman served as Managing Officer of RI, an Association of 29,000 service clubs in 162 countries with 1.2 million members. Upon retirement in 1986, he spent three years at the helm of Rotary's Polio Immunization Task Force, helping to launch PolioPlus operations in some 100 polio-endemic countries in ASIA, AFRICA, and LATIN AMERICA. He is currently Vice Chairman of RI's PolioPlus Committee, which directs Rotary's nearly $500 million input for polio eradication. He and his wife, Betty, live in rural Warren County, where they are engaged in farming. He holds an honorary doctorate from Franklin College, of which he is a journalism graduate and former trustee. He is a former President of the Rotary Clubs of Boswell, and Evanston, IL. Mr. Pigman will be introduced by JIM TURLEY, Program Coordinator for the month of November, and Chair, International Foundation Committee.

Prior to the invocation today, President DAN TEDER requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: YB HALL (KATHY MEEKS reported that YB was in the Westminster Village Health Care undergoing therapy and is doing fine); BOB HIATT; LARRY LANE (Having surgery on his left knee tomorrow, Wednesday, at Home Hospital); JOHN MC KEE; BEV STONE; MARJORIE WALKER, spouse of DICK; and DENNIS WEIDENAAR (Had surgery last week and is up and around, but did not feel like attending Rotary and introducing the speaker today, so asked KEITH SMITH to do the introduction).

PROGRAM (November 7, 2000)

KEITH SMITH, substituting for DENNIS WEIDENAAR, introduced Professor Marshall Martin who made a most interesting presentation regarding Agricultural Biotechnology (Biotechnology). Prof. Martin discussed: (1) How Biotechnology is related to medical applications, food processing, and crops; (2) Who regulates Biotechnology; (3) A European perspective regarding Biotechnology; (4) American attitudes toward Biotechnology; and (5) Critics of Biotechnology. If interested further, GRIFF has material related to Prof. Martin's presentation.
