KIRK CLARK, Program Coordinator for December, introduced Dr. Deborah W. Knapp, Professor of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Purdue, who made a most interesting presentation about the
challenge of cancer, which according to Dr. Knapp, one in every four will get cancer. Dr. Knapp noted that their work with animal cancer involved three areas: bone, bladder, and prostate, and that
there is a relation of pet animal (dogs and cats) cancer to human cancer. While the group of veterinarians with whom she works is doing research in all three of these areas, Dr. Knapp concentrated her remarks to
the specific area of animal bladder cancer which affects some 54,000 animals each year in the U.S.; 80% of these being superficial and easily treated, the other 20%
do not respond to treatment. She indicated that human bladder cancer is very similar to the cancer of the 20% group of animals; it is only with animals, not mice
or rats, where this relationship occurs. Their group targeted the cox gene (cyclooxygenase) which had been important for a long time for the treatment of
arthritis. Now cox inhibitors are working as well as chemotherapy in the treatment of animal bladder cancer and cox inhibitors combined with chemotherapy provides
even better results. The cox inhibitors trick the cancer cells to commit suicide. The impact on humans is now being pursued with a group of urologists at the Indiana
University School of Medicine where the treatment of four patients has resulted in complete remission of bladder cancer for two of the patients. Dr. Knapp stated that
bladder cancer occurs 18 times more frequently in the Scottish Terrier breed of dogs; therefore, the group will be directing research on this breed to see if there are
any variables that might aid with the treatment of human bladder cancer. Dr. Knapp closed by indicating that their group, in cooperation with many others, are doing
research which will lead to the cure of cancer in pet animals and people. VISITORS: Candiss Vibbert (Executive Assistant to the President of Purdue), guest
