UPCOMING PROGRAM (July 2, 2002)

Tuesday, July 2, 2002, is the day that President OSCAR HOPKINS and President Elect DAVE BOUGH have decided will be the administration/leadership change of the Lafayette Rotary Club. Retiring President OSCAR will review the highlights of his past Rotary year and incoming President Elect DAVE will outline his program for the 2002-2003 Rotary year. It is hoped that members, and especially Club Past Presidents (tables will be reserved for Past Presidents), will make a special effort to attend to extend their thanks to President OSCAR for his efforts during the past Rotary year and to show your support to President Elect DAVE in the upcoming 2002-2003 Rotary year.

JULY 2nd MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors- NELLIE LECHMAN - 11:15 to 11:45a.m., and GORDY YOUNG - 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Greeter - JIM HANKS; Invocation - SUSAN SMITH; and Music - GREG NAPIER.

JAN GRIFFIN-KOEHLER is July's program chair.

  • July 9 - "New Happenings at the Senior Center" Helen Dillon, Executive Director, Tippecanoe Senior Center.
  • July 16 - "Junior Achievement Programs Are Growing" Kathy Stewart, Program Manager, Junior Achievement of Greater Lafayette.
  • July 23 - "The Hearts N Parks Initiative", Vicki Mayes, Superintendent, Lafayette Parks & Recreation Department.
  • July 30 - "Sounds of the Youth Orchestra", Alfred Abel, Conductor, will speak and they will have a flute quartet entertain us!

CLUB CONCERNS

PRESIDENT OSCAR HOPKINS, requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: GRIFF (who is home as of last Thursday - he is still having some seepage from his which has slowed recovery, but is slowly getting better, he had his right knee replaced Wednesday, June 5, 2002).  JOHN and EUDORA MC KEE; ED PAGE; FAE SPURLOCK; BEV STONE; HARLAND WHITE; and Jay Wiley, son of JAY WILEY. MARGERY ISMAIL was not at Rotary today preparing for hip surgery that she'll have on Wednesday.  BUD BAUGH was also not at Rotary today, he will have back surgery on Thursday. Our deepest sympathy to JIM TURLEY and his family on the loss of JIM's father.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ROTARY "Ripples" The Executive Committee and Board of Directors have decided "Ripples" will no longer be mailed, but sent to you electronically with a few copies available at the secretary's table at Rotary meetings.

PLEASE NOTE: The Rotary office is now located in the Cinergy PSI building, 621 North 3d Street - telephone 423-9813, there is voice mail there now.

PROGRAM (June 25, 2002)

SUSAN HYCHKA introduced Leah Jamieson, Ransburg Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue University. Topic: "EPICS � Engineering Solutions to Lafayette's Community Needs." Dr. Jamieson (co-founder along with Ed Coyle of the EPICs program) gave an interesting presentation about this multi-disciplinary team design program started at Purdue. EPICs helps engineering student as well as other disciplines to communicate, work in teams in real world projects and to better understand their customers. It has grown to a nationwide program and is at a number of other universities. Right here at Purdue this past year the success and growth shows with 24 teams, involving 320 students, and 75 ongoing projects at local not-for-profit organizations.  Partnership is the heart of this program and the concept of making a difference has been shared with many students.

MAKEUPS: STEVE KNECHT Lafayette Daybreak Rotary meeting 6/13/02. BILL HATFIELD had 7+ make-ups at District meetings, Kokomo Club and Indianapolis Club meetings.

VISITORS: Sandy & Zbig Grabowski were guests of ELSA JANLE. TRACIE HUGHES guest's today was her husband Bryan Hughes. LARRY HUGGINS guest today was his granddaughter Samantha Swinford from Memphis.  RAY PEETERS' guests today was Jim Peterson a former Glee Club member who did a wonderful job singing for us today.

INDIANA BUSINESS COLLEGE GUEST: Ami Gill, hosted by GREG REGER.

FREE MEALS: Winner of the free meal drawing were BOB JEFFARES (absent) & TRACIE HUGHES, who generously donated her winnings to the Lafayette Rotary Foundation.
