PROGRAM Continuing to shine a spotlight on Community Treasurers, JIM HANKS introduced a very distinguished
panel to tell us why Leadership Lafayette is needed. Rotarian BOB GRIFFITH, one of the founding fathers of the organization, described the vision twenty years ago to develop the community's asset of quality volunteer
leadership more quickly. We were among the first communities to recognize the need for a program to teach basic leadership skills to all ages, men and women, employers and
employees. BOB introduced a Leadership Lafayette graduate and active community volunteer, Grayce Lechtenburg, who talked about her involvement in her children's
school and the family church, but needed a change. She was surprised to find that she was not the oldest in the class and that there was more to be learned about the
community she thought she knew well. A passionate proponent of Leadership and what is has to offer, Grayce now serves on the YWCA Board as well as the YWCA
Foundation Board, the Public Schools Foundation of Tippecanoe County Board where she is board secretary, and also the Purdue Convocations Advisory Board.
Grayce introduced DAN GICK who spoke about the Career Leadership Academy. The issue of leadership vs. management is familiar to most executives. This
program is based on participation of everyone in the program, which is a diverse group. They work on real live projects. DAN's employer believes strongly in the program as a way to "sharpen your axe"!
DAN introduced the president of Leadership Lafayette, BETTY NELSON, who pointed out that leadership skills can be applied to all aspects of one's life. She
referred us to a fact sheet detailing the number of people graduates involved in the area's many organizations and governmental bodies. Leadership Lafayette is a
non-profit organization and not funded by United Way. BETTY introduced CHRISTY SMITH, the Executive Director of Leadership Lafayette for many years, and thanked
BOB GRIFFITHS for his vision and dedication to the cause from the beginning. JIM HANKS was also thanked for the opportunity to share this treasure with our club.
