CLUB CONCERNS

PRESIDENT BETTY SUDDARTH, requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: JOHN and Eudora MC KEE; ED PAGE; FAE SPURLOCK; Marjorie spouse of DICK WALKER; BOB BROCK; and BEN DAY. We enjoyed seeing JOHN McKEE and ED HEMMER at Rotary today. ED, looking fit, thanked members for all the calls and cards while he was hospitalized in Maine.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:


• The next Small Group Dinner will be held on October 8th at the home of TOM and Ruth MORAN, 760 Cardinal Drive, Lafayette. The time is 6:30 p.m and the cost is $8 to be paid to Tom on the evening of the dinner. There will be seating for 8 guests. Please contact ADRIENNE BOUGH with your reservation.
• BETTY DOVERSBERGER has scheduled a meeting of the Youth Committee on Oct. 7, immediately after the regular meeting.

FAMILY NEWS:

Denise and I became grandparents for the first time last Wednesday night as Michael Jeffrey Schmidt made his appearance into this world at Home Hospital. Baby Michael, Mother Rebecca and Father Jeffrey are all doing excellent. Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt Jan are exuberant! We will send a gift to the Rotary Foundation in honor of our new family member. I would bring him to Rotary but the food wouldn't agree with him at present!

Committee sheets are available at the back table or on-line. Now that committees are meeting, make-up credit can be given if committee chairs will report attendance to me by e-mail or bringing a list to the next meeting.

• If you find anything regarding you that needs to be corrected in the new Directory (i.e., employer, position, e-mail, spouse's name, etc.), please contact me or DAVE LANDGREBE. We are now working with one database instead of two, making it easier to keep updated and accurate records. Information that was correct in last year's directory was in Chris Funk's database and not nec essarily in the one we are currently using. We can update as we go so that next y ear's directory will be correct.
• There is concern that some members are not able to see the Lafayette Rota ry website. If you have the page bookmarked or in your "favorites" list, yo u will need to delete it. Go to the Rotary web page (www.lafayetterotary.org) a nd bookmark it again. There has been a tiny change made concerning the mysteries of computer technology, which helped us to keep the site going and manageable. If you have trouble connecting to the Ripples page from the link sent in the e-mail message, please contact BRUCE HARDING for help.

PROGRAM:



AL CHISCON introduced his long time friend, Will Carpenter, who is a retired Vice-President, Monsanto and recent U.S. Representative to and Co-chair of the Science Advisory Board of the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and recipient of the Roderick Prize in Science, Arms Control and International Security. Will made a very interesting presentation on the process that took place to draft a chemical weapons treaty with 150 member nations, ratified by the U.S. in 1997. It was a 20 year process involving the chemical industry and governments from all over the world. For more information go to their web site at www.cbaci.org

STUDENT GUESTS:

JEFF DARLING introduced Lisa Decker, Advisor on the Lafayette Mayor's Youth Council. This council was established about three years ago to get youth involved in civic projects. Lisa introduced members Troy Sandy and Amanda Williamson who gave a short presentation explaining how the council is organized and some of the projects they have engaged in. They received a certificate and a travel mug with the four-way test to commemorate their visit with us.
