    PROGRAM:

ELSA JANLE, Senior Director in the Vocational Avenue of Service, explained that Guidelines for High Ethical Standards were adopted by Rotary International in 1989. Our Club annually awards a Service Above Self Award to individuals who have met these standards in the course of their career and four $600 scholarships to deserving technical college students. This year's recipients of the Service Above Self Award were BOB BROCK and Sonya Margerum.
JIM HANKS reminded us of BOB'S many contributions to our community, including his work with youth, the Long Center for the Performing Arts, Lafayette Symphony Foundation, July Fourth Stars and Stripes Concert, Rotary's membership committee and the Federated Church. JIM described BOB as the "consummate community volunteer."
JAN MILLS and BETTY NELSON shared some of Sonya Margerum's many accomplishments in her service to the community. Curbside recycling, an upgraded sanitation system, Morton Community Center, Wabash Landing, the Celery Bog and miles of trails, cooperation with Purdue and Purdue Research Park, major roles in state and national organizations exist with thanks to her vision as a public servant. On the private side she served as president of the League of Women Voters and aided the consolidation of the two cities' leagues into one organization; taught Sunday School for first graders of years; was a Red Devil Mother and actively supported baseball, basketball, and football events; and served two terms (six years) on the Board of Regents for St. Olaf College.
Scholarship Recipients are: Elaine Blankman and Jamie Lattimore from Indiana Business College; Trudy Garrison and Toni Kinslow from Ivy Tech State College. Each of these women has a compelling story of courage and determination. They will represent Rotary well with their use of the scholarship to make a difference in their lives (and the lives of their families).

    • Board of Director's News

      • 1. Vice President Elect SUSAN HYCHKA presented a plan for the Centennial Project (a project requested of every club to be completed by early 2005 to show Rotary at work in the community) that involves an overlook of the Wabash River on the West Lafayette side at the old Brown Street Bridge site. She believes $37,500 in cash, in-kind services and materials and labor will allow Rotary to have its name at the site.

        2. STELLA BATAGAINNIS, co-chair of the Community Service Project committee, presented a plan for service projects that will be helpful to local agencies helping the homeless. There will be a wide array of opportunities to serve.

        3. The Planning Committee, represented by JIM KLUSMAN and BETTY NELSON, presented facts and questions for the board to discuss concerning Membership and Attendance Policies. The discussion centered on procedures and not on policy, but the planning committee offered to present a draft based on thoughts that evolved.

    • The Lafayette Rotary Foundation Board approved a $25,000 level of recognition called Platinum

    • FOUNDATION FACTOID:

      • The Lafayette Rotary Foundation is capable of accepting and would gladly welcome non-cash contributions of stocks and certain other assets.
