    CLUB CONCERNS:

PRESIDENT BETTY SUDDARTH, requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: JOHN and EUDORA MC KEE; FAE SPURLOCK; Marjorie spouse of DICK WALKER, BOB WILKINSON and GRIFF.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS:

    • The meeting will begin early (at Noon) next week in order to give the Scholarship/Citizenship Committee ample time to recognize ten students.

    • President BETTY thanked the GSE Committee and especially co-chairs GORDON COPPOC and FRED ANDERSON for the superb job they did with this year's team.

    • Vice President SUSAN HYCHKA invited us to join other Rotarians in an evening of fun and friendship, a celebration of the many ways Lafayette Rotary Club has found this past year to "Lend a Hand" both locally and internationally. Our Annual Dinner takes place Tuesday, May 4, 2004, in the Grand Ballrooms of the University Inn. Camaraderie (with a cash bar) begins at 6:00 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.

Entertainment for the evening is "Opera in a Briefcase." It's opera as you've never heard it before. From Bizet to The Beatles to Irving Berlin - it's a humorous, delightfully entertaining and somewhat wacky blend of familiar opera melodies and popular music, performed by some of the community's best singers. Local arts critic Richard Jaeger recommended this program to our club, saying, "It's the best new show in town." Dinner music will be provided by a string quartet led by talented violinist Karen Issacs.

Tickets are $25/person and will be available at Rotary on April 20 and 27. Please come and bring your spouse and/or special guests. You may also reserve your tickets by emailing your reservation to SUSAN HYCHKA

    • MIKE PIGGOTT, representing the Community Service Committee announced that our projects will focus on the homeless - hence the theme of "Reaching Out to Our Neighbors". For starters, on April 27th we are each asked to bring two cans of food or two non-perishable items. Mark your calendars so that you don't forget to bring something!

    • Dues statements have been sent. Please respond so that we don't have to pester you with a phone call.

    • Deadline for Nominations for Rotarian of the Year is next Tuesday. Forms for this award, which is presented at the Annual Dinner, are available from JANE.

    • The Rotaract Club at Purdue is set up and ready to go. Do you have a son or daughter attending Purdue? This would be a great way to introduce them to Rotary. Please let BETTY know of a student who should be contacted to join this club.

    • Rotary License plates are still available. Of the $25.00 extra you will pay to have this special identification, $15.00 returns to our club. This is a fairly painless way to support Rotary and to demonstrate your pride in belonging to one of the world's finest organizations.

    THANK YOU:

    Dear Ms. Turner:

Please convey my gratitude to your organization for the generous scholarship. I am honored and humbled by your confidence in my schooling and in your kindness to extend such benefits to the students of our area.

At my request, Ivy Tech has applied your scholarship to next fall's expenses. That will ease the pressures of summer for me and my husband.

I enjoyed the luncheon and greatly enjoyed meeting and chatting with the various Rotary members. It was a pleasant experience a year ago when I spoke to our group, and that was reiterated again this year at the scholarship presentation luncheon.

Again, thank you so much for your generosity.

    Sincerely,

    Trudy R. Garrison
    Rensselaer, IN

    PRESIDENT BETTY'S WISDOM:

I am confused. I can never remember if "energy crunch" is the name of a problem or a breakfast cereal.
