ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD - 2004:

President BETTY SUDDARTH presented DALE McHENRY the Rotarian of the Year Award for 2004 with the following comments:

The Rotarian of the Year selection criteria is based on participation in Rotary and on Community service exemplifying Service above Self. Tonight's recipient has clearly done both of these. Our sixth recipient for this award has been active on a number of club committees, serving in various capacities in all avenues of service. He has been an active participant in many of our community projects, such as bell ringing for the Salvation Army, building the Habitat House, Singing for Greater Lafayette, landscaping for the YWCA, Girl Scout Camp, and the Tippecanoe Battleground Memorial, where he went above and beyond the call of duty by trying to clear the ravine.

Now that most of you know who it is, let me tell you a little more about him. He has served on the Board of Directors and is a past president of the club. He was the treasurer of the club for many years and is currently the assistant treasurer for the Foundation. Serving on the Group Study Exchange committee, Dale has driven the inbound team to Evanston to visit RI headquarters for the past two years.
You have seen him often, collecting the money for lunch, selling tickets for events and just generally helping out. He is a golden service plus contributor to the local foundation and just recently received his second Paul Harris award. Dale's community and professional activities include board membership and former president of the Greater Lafayette Convention and Visitors Center, as well as, former board member and president of the National Association of College Unions. Dale and Judy have been active in the Lafayette Jefferson High School Band Boosters. Dale is an active participant in the Purdue Retirees Association, has served as chair of the benefits committee and is currently the retiree representative to the University-wide benefits committee.
Before retirement, Dale was the Director of the Purdue Memorial Union, which at that time included overseeing the Black Cultural Center and the Elliott Hall of Music. The Lafayette Rotary Club is indeed fortunate to have such an active and involved member and I am very pleased to present Dale McHenry as the 2004 Rotarian of the Year.

    PROGRAM:

At this evening's Annual Dinner, we celebrated Rotary and this year's theme, Lend a Hand. Following dinner Paul Harris was summoned from heaven to give us some of his thoughts about the organization he created that cold February day in 1905. He's been watching the growth worldwide and is even aware of activities in our club over the years. JIM HANKS. playing PAUL HARRIS, was interviewed by SUSAN HYCHKA, providing a very special Rotary moment.

Dinner music was provided by the Lafayette Area String Quartet. The evening ended with Alison Camillo, Chris Clarke, Jo Gelfand, Craig LaFuse, Kathy Lind, Julie Ricciardi, Reid Ricciardi, Cathy Russell, Alice Schwind and Jon Ranard presenting "Opera in a Briefcase". It was opera as you've never heard it before. Fun!

Thanks to the Annual Dinner committee who made this evening a success: LEONA COHEN, JIM HANKS, TRACIE HUGHES, DALEL MCHENRY, JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER, KATHY MEEKS, THOMAS MORAN, ERIC MURTHY, NELSON PARTHURST, STEVEN STUCKY, PAUL ZIEMER, AND COMMITTEE CHAIR SUSAN HYCHKA.
