    THANK YOU:

    Dear Jane,

Many thanks to the Lafayette Rotary Club for the beautiful plant that was delivered to my home last week. It was two weeks ago today that I had open heart surgery in Indianapolis for the replacement and reconstruction of part of the aorta and replacement of the aortic valve. My doctors did a terrific job during surgery, and since that time, I have made great progress each day in the process of recovery. My activities are greatly limited at this point, but I look forward to returning to my office at Purdue on a limited basis in early August, and resuming a full schedule, including Rotary meetings, by the end of the summer. I am most appreciative to the Lafayette Rotary Club for the good thoughts and for the plant!

    Again, many thanks.

    Tom Robinson

    PROGRAM:

DON GUSTAFSON introduced Bob Kriebel, local historian extraordinaire, who talked about his new book, Tippecanoe and Lincoln, Too, which costs $20.00 a copy. Stories and statistics from the book gave a picture of this county's contribution to the Civil War. He reminded us that Lincoln traveled through Lafayette twice; once on February 11, 1861 when he gave a speech at Lafayette junction (where all the railroads came together) and again in his casket on May 1, 1865 at 3:30 A.M.

    VISITING ROTARIANS:

ED ELLIOTT, Naples, FL; MAUREEN SMITT, Ft. Myers South; Asst. District Governor ROBERTA GRAHAM, Brownsburg, IN

    GUESTS:

Carol Rew, wife of CARL REW; Caroline Hass, sister of MARGARET HALL; Judy Stevenson, wife of WARREN STEVENSON; Jon Cohen, son of FRITZ COHEN.

THANKS TO THOSE WHO HELP WITH MEETING FUNCTION:

Money Collectors: VICKI BURCH 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., and LETA KELLEY 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m,; Greeter: JACOB WILLIAMS; Invocation: JOE BOORMAN; Music: BOB GRIFFITHS with RAY PEETERS, HARLEY FREY and REX KEPLER at the piano; JO WADE for help at the back table, BILL FULLER for help with Ripples, and DAVE LANDGREBE for help with the Directory.

    • The Board of Directors meeting focused on attendance policy. About 50 members do not meet the 25% attendance requirement. If you know someone who does not join in the fellowship, please encourage that member to come to lunch or to participate in a service project. Participation counts! And Rotary International has an attendance requirement.

    • The 2004/05 Committee list is posted on the Bulletin Board and is available at the back table. If you are not on the committee of your choice, please contact the chair. There is a job for everyone!

    • Rotary Golf Shirts are on the back table for inspection. If you would like to order one, please give your preference of style, size and color to me along with payment. The shirts are $30 and $35 each. A Moment of Humor:

    PRESIDENT TOM'S WISDOM:

    A Moment of Humor:

Sometimes conflicts are not what we think they are as discovered in the following:

Transcript of an actual radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S ONE - FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call!
