    ROTARY FACT:

The Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program is Ambassadorial Scholarships. Since 1947 more than 30,000 men and women from 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. More than 1,100 scholarships were awarded for study in 2002-03. Through grants totaling approximately US$26 million, recipients from some 69 countries studied in more than 64 nations.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to greater understanding of their host countries.

    PROGRAM:
CHRIS JOHANSSEN, program chair for the month of August and also chair of the International Project Committee, introduced Heather Day, Assistant Coordinator for the International Friendship Program. She introduced Ryan and Jennifer Burnette who spoke about their involvement with the program. Having Richi Parashar become a part of their family enriched all of their lives. Richi then spoke about his experiences with the Burnettes. Michael Brzezinski, Director of the International Students and Scholars wound up the presentation by reminding us that 1,000 foreign students will be coming to campus this week and encouraged all of us to get involved.

    • The Board of Directors has been studying the attendance policy and our actual attendance figures for a couple of months. There is concern that several of our members have not been seen for a long time, even though we have a very lenient 25% attendance policy. An initiative to encourage better attendance and participation will begin soon. Stay tuned for details of the new attendance policy.
    • Foundation Factoid:
The Lafayette Rotary Foundation has committed to providing $25,000 of support to the Prophetstown project. ($10,000 has already been paid).

    Invitation from International Friendship Program:

    Dear Rotarians:

Thank you for expressing interest in the International Friendship Program. You need only attend an orientation. Pick one orientation session below convenient to you and use the enclosed map to direct you. Please note that only one orientation is required. The table below shows three options you can choose.

    Option 1 Thursday, August 12
    Option 2 Wednesday, August 18
    Option 3 Tuesday, August 24

Each session is in Schleman Hall (SCHL), Room 112 from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

These orientations will explain the program in more detail and will provide helpful information on how your family can make contact with your international student. In the next few weeks, over 1000 international students will be arriving at Purdue for the first time. What a tremendous opportunity we have to welcome these students into our community! I look forward to meeting you at an orientation and working with you to extend a welcome to international students at Purdue University. And for being "a bridge between two nations and across the hearts of two cultures" (as one of our international students put it one time), thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Heather Day
    Assistant Coordinator
    International Friendship Program

    PRESIDENT TOM'S WISDOM:

With the return of college students to our area let me share these thoughts with you:

You Might Be A College Student if:

If your trash is overflowing and your bank account isn't
If you are personally keeping the local pizza place from bankruptcy
If your breakfast consists of a coke on the way to class
If your social life consists of a date with the library
If you celebrate when you find a quarter
If you get more sleep in class than in your room
If your idea of feeding the poor is buying yourself some Ramen Noodles
If you live in an area that is smaller than most mobile homes
