PRESIDENT TOM SCHMIDT requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: JOHN MC KEE; FAE SPURLOCK; BOB WILKINSON; HANLY HAMMEL and FRITZ COHEN.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:


• Semi-annual dues of $96.00 are due by November 1st.


• President Elect SUSAN HYCHKA announced that the Centennial Project construction has been delayed which gives us more time to collect $8,000 to reach our goal. There will be a hands-on landscaping opportunity in the spring.


• DAVE LAHR, Community Projects co-chair, announced that next Tuesday, October 19th, we are invited to join the Vectren Volunteer program at Hanna Center from 10 AM to 2 PM. Since there will be no Rotary lunch that day, it will be a perfect time to help landscape Hanna Center's property. Two Colts Football players have promised to help!


• DONNA MELOY needs for you to let a student follow you around for a day (called job shadowing). Please fill out a form at the back table or contact DONNA if you can help.


• JOHN MEYERS asks that members who have actual memories of December 7, 1941, or that period of time to contact him at 423-9168 (weekdays) or 414-0886 (cell) or at e-mail, either meyerslaw@aol.com or meyers@county.tippecanoe.in.us. He is preparing for the program on December 7.

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:


FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.


FAMILY NEWS:


CONGRATULATIONS to MARTHA CHISCON for receiving a Torchbearer Award from the Indiana Commission for Women. The first-time honor is the highest award given by the state to women who have overcome barriers to equality or have made Indiana a better place to live. One of twenty-three women honored during the Indiana Salute to Women banquet, MARTHA was honored in the education category. She is known for her efforts in promoting equality for women in athletics and science. She was nominated by the YWCA.



CONTRATULATIONS to CARL REW whose family increased by one grandson, Declan McQueen Brantley on October 7th. Thank you, CARL, for the very generous contribution to The Rotary Foundation in celebration.



A new book of Christmas poetry has just been released by Fairway Press entitled, KEEPING CHRISTMAS. Dr. J. PHILIP KLINGER has written these poems over a forty year period and has collected them in one volume. In his introduction, Dr. KLINGER writes "I do not write poetry, I write poems. Some of the poems are time-sensitive, some are feeling-driven, and others are event-inspired."

In his forward to the publication, Dr. Neal F. Fisher, President Emeritus of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois has written: "William Wordsworth said that poetry springs from "emotion recollected in tranquility." In KEEPING CHRISTMAS, a distinguished pastor and preacher recollects in the tranquility of the Christmas story the emotions of changing times. Readers will locate themselves in these lines of verse written in the context of family and public events. They will also find their faith fortified by the vibrant personal witness of one who has embraced the Story of Christ's birth and made it his own."

PROGRAM:
BETTY DOVERSBERGER introduced Dr. David Bathe, currently Academic Dean at Ivy Tech. He will become Chancellor when BETTY retires in January. In reviewing the plans for Ivy Tech's future, he shared the Vision; the Foundation; the need for a Community College system; Indiana's Goals; Ivy Tech's Academic Development plans; Community, Resources and Student Development needs.

? Please excuse Gloria from Jim today. She is administrating.

? Pleazse excuse Roland from P.E. for a few day. Yesterday he fell out of a tree and misplaced his hip.

? Mary could not come to school because she has been bothered by very close veins.

? Please excuse Ray Friday from school. He has very loose vowels.

? Please excuse Tom for being absent yesterday. He had diarrhea and his boots leak. ? Please excuse Jimmy for being. It was his father's fault.

? Please excuse Harriet for missing school yesterday. We forget to get the Sunday paper off the porch. and when we found it Monday, we thought it was Sunday.

? Please excuse my son's tardiness. I forgot to wake him up and I did not find him till I started making the beds.
