• If you would be interested in going to Chicago for one day during the Rotary International Convention, please sign up on the bulletin boards. This is a survey to see if there will be enough interest to charter a bus.


• ANN PICHOTA, chair of the Salvation Army Committee, announced that our day to ring the bells in the Red Kettle Campaign is December 11th. etters will be mailed soon for individual contributions.


• DAVE LAHR thanked the ten members who volunteered at Hanna Center last Tuesday.


• Don't forget to bring a non-perishable food item next week!


• SUSAN HYCHKA reported that about $7,000 is still needed for the Centennial Overlook project. If you have not contributed, please do so soon!


FAMILY NEWS:

Wedding bells have been ringing! BILL HEATH and Miriam Epple eloped! BILL KEALEY and Kristine Mohrs were married September 4th. And CECIL BLIGNAUT'S son, John, was married to Lori Tompkins on October 2nd. Happiness abounds as our Rotary family grows!!!!!

ROTARY FACT:

Programs for Young People

Since the 1920s, Rotary International has developed a number of programs designed to extend the reach of Rotary service and offer young people an opportunity to serve and promote international goodwill. Rotary youth exchanges began taking place informally in 1929 and became an official RI program in 1974. Since then, 7,000 high school students from around the world have traveled abroad each year under the auspices of the Youth Exchange program, staying with Rotarian volunteer host families. Exchanges can occur between any two countries in which Rotary clubs are active.

In the 1960s, Rotary launched two programs designed to help young people become more service-oriented. Interact began in 1962 as an international organization of service and social clubs for high school students that promotes Rotary Meeting Notes for October 26, 2004, international understanding and peace. Founded in 1968, Rotaract is a Rotary-club-sponsored service and leadership organization for men and women ages 18 to 30 that emphasizes the importance of individual responsibility as the basis for personal success and community involvement. In 1971, RI established the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program, which sponsors camps and seminars to help promising young leaders between the ages of 18 and 30 further develop their leadership skills.

Thanks so much for the lovely flowers sent to me in behalf of the Rotary Club during my recent hospitalization. The surgery was successful, and the lab report showed the cancer to have been contained within the kidney. Within a couple of weeks, I expect to be allowed to drive, and will then resume my presence in Rotary.

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

A gloomy Homecoming Saturday was brightened up considerably by the beautiful Anthuriam, which was delivered to my front door that morning. It will continue to brighten my days and gladden my heart through the holiday season. It is blooming profusely. There is no very cheerful news about my voice; it could be quite a while before the nerves heal and it returns to normal. Many thanks for thinking of me,

PROGRAM:

MIKE PIGGOTT introduced Dr. Thomas Summer, a surgeon with Unity Medical Center, and the son of a Rotarian in Washington, IL. He spoke to us from the perspective of a physician, not an administrator with an agenda. While emphasizing that all of the medical professionals are dedicated to high quality health care in this community, he admitted that healthcare is THE big issue in this community. Unity will work with any hospital that will take care of their patients and has no plans to be as large a clinic as Arnett. They believe competition is good for the patient.

PRESIDENT TOM'S WISDOM:

Unity Health Care is building new medical resources on Creasy Lane and inviting the community to open houses, so I thought that this expression of humor was appropriate.

A new business was opening and one of the owner's friends wanted to send flowers for the occasion. They arrived at the new business site and the owner read the card; it said; "Rest in Peace".

The owner was angry and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist said: 'Sir, I'm really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry you should imagine this: somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying 'Congratulations on your new location'."
