PRESIDENT TOM SCHMIDT requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: JOHN MC KEE; FAE SPURLOCK; and HANLY HAMMEL.

CONGRATULATIONS:

PPRESIDENT TOM presented PAST PRESIDENT BETTY SUDDARTH the 20003-2004 Rotary International Presidential Citation and 2003-2004 Rotary District Governors Citation. These citations were presented to the club at the District Conference last weekend.

BIRTHDAY TABLE:

KATHY MEEKS introduced the members celebrating birthdays this month and announced that this generous group has contributed $1,657.00 to the good causes of our Foundations.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

• DAVID BOUGH, Nominating Committee Chair, announces that election of Directors and Officers will held Tuesday December 7, 2004. The Nominations Committee will present a slate of four Directors (two gown and two town), as well as President, President-Elect, Vice President, Executive Secretary, Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer. Nominations will be accepted from the membership, but must be in the hands of the Nominations Committee by Friday November 26, 2004. Each nomination must have written support of two (2) additional members and the written consent of the nominee.


• PRESIDENT TOM reminded us that Polio Eradication pledges are due.

• If you would be interested in going to Chicago for one day during the Rotary International Convention, please sign up on the bulletin boards. This is a survey to see if there will be enough interest to charter a bus.


• ANN PICHOTA, chair of the Salvation Army Committee, announced that our day to ring the bells in the Red Kettle Campaign is December 11th. Be prepared to sign up for a two-hour time slot next week. Letters will be mailed soon for individual contributions.


• Keep the contributions for the Centennial Overlook Project coming. We are gaining on the goal!


• Partners of the Americas - where many of BILL FULLER's guests come from - is looking for host families for teen-age Brazilian students. If you can help, please contact BILL.


• LES REKER, chair of the Culture Committee, highlighted a few of the events coming up in November.

• At the Rotaract meeting Tuesday night the group decided to participate in a Food Drive that is campus wide for campus groups. Bringing food to help support their cause would be a positive expression on our part. Food will be collected through Nov 8-18. Rotaract is going to pass out flyers (Thursday or Friday) stating their plan to collect food items and then pick up food on the following Monday.

PROPOSED NEW MEMBER:

Tom Werner, area manager for Aflac Insurance Company and sponsored by PHIL KLINGER has been approved by the Board. If there are no objections, he will be introduced as a member soon.

ROTARY FACT:

The 35th President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, (1917-1963), was the youngest man ever elected president of the United States, and he was the youngest ever to die in office. Former President Kennedy was a Rotarian as a member of the Hyannis, Massachusetts Rotary Club.

There are 113 days left until the February 23, 2005 100th year Birthday celebration of Rotary International.

PROGRAM:

CHRISTA KECK, Senior Director for the International Avenue of Service introduced JACK KELLEY, chair of the World Community Service Committee. JACK briefly described The Rotary Foundation and how it works. He then presented three projects that the committee is looking at. One involves supplying sewing machines to a woman's workshop in India, another is to help build homes in Haiti, and the third is a shelter for orphans in Medellin, Columbia, (ANDRES SANCHEZ'S home town).

• One of the many things learned at the District Conference at French Lick last weekend was that the Council on Legislation recommendation that ROTARY INTERNATIONAL be printed in capital letters, received approval by the Board of Directors.
• Dues will be billed every six months to cover the periods May through October, and November through April. Dues bills will be mailed on the first weekday on or after April 1 and October 1. Payment for dues is to arrive in the Lafayette Rotary Club mailbox, or be given to the Executive Secretary not later than November 1 or May 1. If dues payment is not received by November 1 or May 1, the member will be proposed for removal from the Rotary membership roles at the Rotary Club Board meting scheduled to be held the second Monday in November or second Monday in May, unless the member has contacted the Executive Secretary or the Treasurer and has explained the extenuating circumstances why they are unable to pay their dues by that time. If you let your membership lapse, the usual $60.00 new member fee will be charged to be reinstated.
• In case you were wondering, I write the Ripples are written each Tuesday afternoon, with input from members. A template is then sent to BILL FULLER who reformats it for the mailed version and for the internet. If you have something to be published, please send it to me by Tuesday evening.
• The Directory is available in "soft" form. We print it in August and by November there are always several changes. If you would like an updated "soft" copy, please let me know.

CONGRATULATIONS to JACK and LETA KELLEY who each had 2 years, and to TOM SCHMIDT who had 26 years of 100% attendance as of the end of October, 2004.

PRESIDENT TOM'S WISDOM:

On this election day, here are some laws that are on the books in Indiana.
1. One may not back into a parking spot because it prevents police officers from seeing the license plate.
2. Mustaches are illegal if the bearer has a tendency to habitually kiss other humans.
3. State government officials who engage in private duels can be dismissed from their post.
4. A person who dyes, stains, or otherwise alters the natural coloring of a bird or rabbit commits a Class B misdemeanor. (Ind. Code 15-2.1-21- 13(b)
5. Smoking in the state legislature building is banned, except when the legislature is in session.
6. Pedestrians crossing the highway at night are prohibited from wearing tail lights.
7. It is against the law to pass a horse on the street.
8. The value of Pi is 4, and not 3.1415. (Repealed)
9. Elkhart - It is illegal for barbers to threaten to cut off kid's ears.
10. Evansville - While driving on Main Street you may not have your lights on.
11. Gary - Within four hours of eating garlic, a person may not enter a movie house, theater, or ride a public streetcar.
12. South Bend - It is illegal to make a monkey smoke a cigarette.
