    ROTARY FACT:

From the Website of Rotary International on Rotary members we find this message:

Rotary club membership carries with it certain responsibilities.

Members are expected to attend weekly programs of the club. Opportunities to make up attendance include attending the regular meeting of another Rotary club, attending various other Rotary meetings, or attending a club service project authorized by the club board of directors.

Members are required to pay annual dues to their clubs, their districts, and to Rotary International.

Members are expected to participate in local or international activities or projects of the Rotary club.

Clubs encourage members to aspire to leadership or committee roles within their clubs.

    PROGRAM:
TOM introduced SUSAN SMITH who gave away a CD of 1941 music (which had played during dinner) to the Rotarian whose arrival in this world was closest to December 7, 1941 - ELSA JANLE. (THANKS SUSAN!)

HARLEY FREY played military service songs and members of each service stood to salute the flag as theirs was played. We sang This Land is Your Land in honor of the Coast Guard and those who worked in civil defense and critical industries.

JOHN MEYERS introduced Bob Kriebel who reminded us that the news of the attack on Pearl Harbor broke by radio on a sunny Sunday morning in Lafayette. The Journal and Courier printed the news on Monday. Interesting statistics dating to December 7, 1941: Alcoa had 3,000 employees making "war materials". Ross Gear and Tool was manufacturing steering gears for trucks, tracks for tanks and tank retrievers. And Fairfield Manufacturing was making transmission gears for defense contracts.

Bob's remarks were followed by members who remembered the day: DICK WALKER, REX KEPLER, BILL FULLER, GUS GUSTAFSON, JIM SMITH, DICK GRIPE, JERRY COLE, JAY WILEY, BILL PAPE, and FRITZ COHEN. FAYE COLE and LIZ SOLBERB and CARL REW shared stories related to their family and friends. The very moving program was concluded with expressions of thanks to all who served.

    STUDENT GUESTS:

LEW RUNNELS introduced Aya Nakanishi and Thomas Blessing from West Lafayette High School. Each received a certificate and a travel mug with the four-way test to commemorate meeting with us.

    VISITING ROTARIANS:

BOB POYNTER, Lafayette Daybreak and guest of JOHN MEYERS

    PRESIDENT TOM'S WISDOM:

Sometimes the right words just don't come and we speak without thinking. This short story shares that message.

"Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When little Logan received his plate, he started eating right away.

"Logan, wait until we say our prayer," his mother reminded him.

"I don't have to," the little boy replied.

"Of course you do," his mother insisted, "we say a prayer before eating at our house."

"That's at our house," Logan explained, "but this is Grandma's house and she knows how to cook.
