    THANK YOU:

The plant the Lafayette Rotary Club sent to me was greatly appreciated. It gave me that lift I needed during a low point in my convalescense period.

    Thank you, Gene Hills

(Editor's note: Gene is recovering from back surgery.)

    ROTARY FACT:

The "Every Rotarian, Every Year" effort embodies marketing goals to encourage Rotarians worldwide to participate fully in their Rotary Foundation through both their spirit of volunteerism and their generosity . Endorsed by the Foundation's Trustees and the Rotary International Board of Directors, the purpose of the Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative is twofold:
    • Encourage Every Rotarian to participate in a Foundation humanitarian or educational project that truly makes a difference in the world, Every Year;
    • Encourage Every Rotarian to contribute to the Foundation's Annual Programs Fund toward the worldwide US$100 per capita annual giving goal by 2005, Rotary's 100th Anniversary, and Every Year thereafter.

The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, throughout its history, has prided itself on being responsive to the challenges that confront humanity. As global leaders for doing good in the world, Rotarians through their spirit of volunteerism and generous philanthropy, remain at the heart of the Foundation's mission to eradicate polio and further its humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs worldwide. Each day, they work together to change lives in meaningful ways. Each day, they bridge the divide among people to foster world understanding and peace.

    PROGRAM:

BILL HATFIELD introduced Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski, who has an education in law enforcement and many years of experience in police work both here and in Houston. He talked about working together. The City is in good shape to step to the next level of excellence. Objectives for 2005 include: 1) Become smarter at economic growth, 2) Create new opportunities (US 52 & 350S Industrial Park and Riverfront Development), 3) Invest in job creation, 4) Transform challenges into opportunities, 5) Make downtown even better (signage, parking). Traffic problems caused by continued growth will be addressed.

    • KIRK CLARK, chair of the Membership Committee asked me to remind you that if you are unable to make it to lunch on a Tuesday, you are always welcome at another club's meeting. No reservation is needed - just present yourself to the club's secretary and get to know fellow Rotarians seated around you. Many of you (as well as I) have had wonderful experiences making up meetings in other states and in foreign countries.
    • This is the list of nearby clubs that we post on our web site. If you are going to be somewhere else, a book that lists all the clubs in the world, their time and place of meeting, and their president is kept at University Inn. The Rotary International web site also lists all the clubs. Be sure to bring back a make-up card or somehow inform me of your make-up so credit can be recorded.

    PRESIDENT TOM'S WISDOM:

For today's moment of humor, I want to share some noted quotes:

    • Frank Rizzo, ex-police chief and mayor of Philadelphia. "The streets are safe in Philadelphia. It's only the people who make them unsafe."

    • Philip Streifer, Superintendent of Schools, Barrington Rhode Island. "After finding no qualified candidates for the position of principal, the school board is extremely pleased to announce the appointment of David Steele to the post."

    • Brooke Shields, during an interview to become spokesperson for a federal anti-smoking campaign."Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life."

    • David Dinkins, New York City Mayor, answering accusations that he failed to pay his taxes. "I haven't committed a crime. What I did was fail to comply with the law."

    • Mayor Marion Barry, Washington, DC; "Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country."

    • Congressman Joe Early (D-Mass) at a press conference to answer questions about the House Bank Scandal "They gave me a book of checks. They didn't ask for any deposits."

Now, watch what you say, do what is right and keep serving our community and the world!
