    ROTARY FACT:

    About Vocational Service

When professionals join a Rotary club, they do so as a representative of their particular business or profession. This gives Rotarians the dual responsibility of representing their vocation within the club and of exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace.

    Vocational service focuses on:

  • Adherence to, and promotion of, the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public.
  • The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just your own or those that are pursued by Rotarians.
  • The contribution of your vocational talents to the problems and needs of society.
  • The values expressed in The 4-Way Test and the Declaration for Rotarians in Business and Professions, which promote high ethical standards in the workplace, a central theme of Rotary throughout its history.

    PROGRAM:
ELSA JANLE, senior director in the Vocational Avenue of Service, thanked members who have served on the Youth and Vocational Project committees. She described the committee work before introducing the Vocational Scholarship recipients, who read from the essay that accompanied the scholarship application.
Denise Keppeler, accompanied by GREG REGER, from Indiana Business College is improving her English while studying business.

Twila Dowell, Janel Hill and Cynthia Whited, accompanied by Chad Clevenger from Ivy Tech talked about how education and this scholarship contribute to confidence building and the ability to complete their education and get right to work.

MARIELLEN NEIDECK introduced the Service Above Self Award recipient. This award goes to a person (not always a Rotarian) with highest ethical standards in his/her occupation, someone who considers his/her vocation/profession to be another opportunity to serve, and demonstrates Service Above Self. The committee's selection of LIZ SOLBERG was applauded by everyone.
