PRESIDENT TOM SCHMIDT requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: JOHN MC KEE; Marjorie, wife of DICK WALKER; MARGARET HALL; DALE MC HENRY; FAYE COLE's sister; and the family of our little Afghanistan friend, Qudrat.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS:

    • All Hoosiers were saddened April 15 to learn the 16 month old Afgan boy, Qudrat Wardak, died shorty after returning to his home country. Born with no prospect for a full life, he was brought to Indiana for delicate heart surgery through the Gift of Life program, supported by central Indiana Rotarians. Of the sixty-three needy children from abroad given this life- saving surgery in Indiana since 1998, Qudrat is the only one to not survive. In honor of Qudrat's memory, Rotarians are invited to help make Gift of Life heart surgeries available to other needy children with no hope for medical treatment in their home country. Checks should be made payable to "District 6560 WCSF" with the notation "Gift of Life" and sent District 6560 WCSF, P.O. Box 6381, Fishers, IN 46308.

    • JOHN SANDERSON announced that tickets for the Annual Dinner are available for $25 each. Mark your calendar: Tuesday, May 10, 6:00 P.M. University Inn. The Bach Chorale Youth Choir will entertain us.

    • PHIL KLINGER announced the Golf Tournament scheduled for June 30th at the Lafayette Elks Club at 1:00 P.M. Florida (or California?) scramble. Prizes. Co-ed. $50 to play. The funds collected will go toward Polio Eradication.

    ROTARY FACT:

The Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member Program

A Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member is a person who contributes US$100 or more per year to the Annual Programs Fund.

Why are Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members critical to the Foundation?

Rotarians recognize that without sustained support of the Annual Programs Fund, the programs of The Rotary Foundation cannot happen. With contributions of US$100 from every member every year, Rotary could nearly double its efforts to help needy people the world over, supporting the continued growth of programs. In April 2001, the Council on Legislation unanimously passed a resolution approving the goal of US$100 per capita by the year 2005.

What a great difference is made with just a $100 donation per year, but you can give more, but that should be the minimum donation of every Rotarian in the Lafayette Club. Presently about 20% of our club members have given to the Annual Fund.

    Is that enough?

    PROGRAM:
PAUL ZIEMER, chair of the Scholarship/Citizenship committee, introduced fellow committee members, LETA KELLEY and ROB NOLL. He then introduced the Superintendents, Principals and Guidance Counselors from the five high schools represented today. Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each were presented to Andrea Venditti and Thomas Haan from Central Catholic, Kendall Huffer and Joseph Casey from Jefferson, Melissa Trowbridge and James (Reiss) Leuken from McCutcheon, Caitlin Galer- Unti from West Lafayette, Emily Bristow and Jonathan Horine from Harrison based on scholarship and citizenship. Tommy Szalasny from West Lafayette will be presented with his scholarship at a later date as he was unable to be with us today. The parents of the recipients were recognized by accompanying their student to the front of the room for the presentation of a plaque. Congratulations to all!

    PRESIDENT TOM'S WISDOM:

    A lecture about English

A linguistics professor was lecturing to his English class one day. "In English," he said, "A double negative forms a positive. In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative."

A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah, right."
