    VOCATIONAL MOMENT:

    ED HEMMER wove the important facts of his life together for us to tell a most interesting story. A plane crash in the Navy and the loss of his brother to polio provided ED with personal challenges and a new perspective on life. He has spent most of his adult life in service to his family and society. ED service to Rotary has long been known, but we all learned more about this dedicated man today.

    ROTARY FACT:

    Object of Rotary

    The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster the following four objectives:

    FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

    SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

    THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

    FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

    PROGRAM:
    JEANNE NORBERB introduced Sarah Helm, Director of the Purdue Opportunity Awards Program who explained that President Jischke initiated the program so that a Purdue education would be accessible to Indiana residents. The first class of exceptional students offered total financial aid has just completed its first year. The funding is provided by Federal, State, institutional and private funds. Community Foundations throughout Indiana has been asked to participate. The Greater Lafayette Community Foundation headed by JIM KLUSMAN has sponsored a student from Tippecanoe County.

    Heidi Peace from Monroe County was very grateful for the POA program. Acceptance removed her from an abusive family situation and gave her hope - along with a new circle of friends and community support. She hopes to be a social worker and eventually a child advocate.

    A donation of $25,000 will endow a scholarship for someone like Heidi.

    PRESIDENT TOM'S WISDOM:

    Photogenic? Maybe you can relate to the following story by a person who some time ago visited the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

    "When I went to get my driver's license renewed, our local Motor Vehicle Bureau was packed. The line inched along for almost an hour until the man ahead of me finally got his license. He inspected his photo for moment and commented to the clerk, 'I was standing in line so long, I ended up looking pretty grouchy in this picture.'

    The clerk looked at his picture closely, and reassured him, 'It's okay. That's how you're going to look when the cops pull you over anyway.'"
