    VOCATIONAL MOMENT:

CHARLOTTE HOWELLS, who began life in Huntington, WV, and moved to Akron, OH, and Elmhurst IL before arriving in West Lafayette in 1978, chose a career in nursing due to experience with illness as a child. She has held many leadership positions at Home Hospital before becoming the Director of Corporate Compliance in 2002. Nursing is a career she recommends, but also finds is part of her very being. CHARLOTTE enjoys seeing others grow and develop.

    ROTARY FACT:

Required reading: Rotary Basics in the current issue of Rotarian.

    PROSPECTIVE NEW MEMBERS:

Alberta Barker, former President of Daybreak, and Karen Hirsh-Cooper, sponsored by MIKE PIGGOTT, were approved by the Board. If there are no objections, they will be introduced as soon as possible.

    PROGRAM:
SUSAN HYCHKA called a Club Assembly to discuss Membership. Several members were asked why they joined Rotary and why they continue as members.
JIM KLUSMAN joined in 1988 when he was Commander of Air Force ROTC at Purdue. It was encouraged by then President Beering and he liked the international scope of Rotary.
KATHY KROLL knew the DAVE AND ADRIENNE BOUGH, who emphasized the social aspects, and grew to appreciate the international projects.
Surgeon JACK KELLEY knew about service organizations in high school but was unable to participate until his practice allowed him to have lunch with his wife on Tuesdays. He especially appreciates the international projects.
LETA KELLEY adds Family of Rotary and local projects to the above mentioned items as her reasons for being involved.
LIZ SOLBERG is concerned about the way communities function - everywhere - and the town/gown balance this club has helps this community connect and function.
CHRIS JOHANNSEN likes being part of the community movers and shakers, in addition to service projects.
TIM LUZADER's father was in the Lions Club. He joined Rotary while working at Stoneybrook University to represent the school. He enjoys rubbing elbows with town members.
NELLIE LECHMAN adds that when retirement creates a disconnect from community activities, Rotary fills that void.
DICK GRIPE remembers this club as being filled with movers and shakers and a place to have a good time. Parties at Rotary Park and Lake Freeman created tight bonds. He noted the many changes during his more that 50 years of membership.
When asked what makes a good Rotarian, the following qualities were mentioned:
A generous spirit, good organization and leadership skills, enthusiasm, service minded, musical ability (play the piano!), dedicated, community involvement, creative, positive thinking toward the future, international orientation. Several people mentioned that being invited to join by someone important in their lives got them started in the Rotary family. We need to bring 24 new members into the club this year. Make it your job to invite someone with qualities listed above.
