    PRESIDENT SUSAN HYCHKA requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: All those suffering in the after math of Hurricane Katrina; RAY KAVANAUGH; and BRUCE HARDING.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS:

    • KIM KLUSMAN reminded us of the Forum on Child Abuse and Neglect this Thursday, September 8th at the NCHS Auditorium at Ivy Tech. It will be an interactive brainstorming session and all brains are needed.

    • BETTY SUDDARTH encouraged all to put October 2nd on the calendar. Interact will host a picnic at Happy Hollow Park from 4 - 7 PM that day. Cost is $5.00.

    • JACK KELLEY, chair of the Russian Open World project, posted sign up sheets on the bulletin board for breakfast with the group at Rotary Daybreak on Thursday, September 22nd at 7:00 AM or lunch on Friday, September 23rd at Westminster Village. Lunch costs $8.00. The group will not be here on a Tuesday, so these are our two opportunities to meet with them.

    • KIRK CLARK, chair of the Membership Retention committee, encouraged all to attend. The committee will be meeting individually with all members whose attendance is not 25% to see how that might improve or it the person needs to be given an exit interview.

    • The Rotary Club of Danville, IL invites us to share in their 90th Anniversary Celebration to be held at the Beef House, Monday, November 7th. Reception at 5:30 and Dinner at 6:30 PM Central Standard Time. The Guest of Honor will be Rotary International President, CARL-WILHELM STENHAMMAR. $35.00 per person, cash bar. RSVP by October 17. Reservation forms are available from JANE.

    • TOM SCHMIDT'S new position as District Supervisor of Northern Michigan is taking him away from us. We're happy for his District and sad for us. He and Denise have a new address: 820 Valley Avenue, Fremont, MI 49412-9005 cell phone: 231-519-5939 Visit us as often as you can TOM!

    BIRTHDAY TABLE:

    JOHN CARPENTER, standing in for GENE COURTANEY, announced that 18 members are celebrating a birthday in September and not one was a female! The birthday boys have contributed $1,800 so far.

    ROTARY FACT:

    Twenty years ago, during the 1985-86 year of Lafayette Rotary Club, LEROY SILVA served as President and HARLEY GRIFFITH was Secretary. Members of the Board of Directors included GENE COURTANEY, BOB FORD, MICHAEL FRAMPTON and TOM MORAN. New members during the 1985-86 year included JIM FOSTER, MICHAEL HUNT, SCOTT RUMBLE, RICHARD SCHWARZ and JOHN SORENSEN.

    Those in attendance today were asked to stand.

    PROGRAM:
    JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER introduced Dave Murtaugh, our former sheriff, who became a Federal Marshal in 2001. He described the process he went through to receive the appointment by President George Bush and then described the responsibilities of the Marshal Service. They protect federal courts and witnesses, hunt fugitives, and move prisoners and aliens. There are 45,000 employees of the Service. He is appointed for four years and his office is in South Bend.

    FRED KUIPERS introduced Christina Indiano and Kevin Smith from Harrison High School. Each received a certificate and a travel mug with the four- way test to commemorate meeting with us.
