Both will be available at the information table in the lunchroom to answer questions and provide informational materials.

    • Lafayette Daybreak Rotary will meet at the Holiday Inn Select during the month of November. Every Thursday (except Thanksgiving) at 7 A.M. you will find them gathered in Rotary fellowship. They welcome members of our group who want to make-up.

    • JEAN JACKSON reported that there are still 14 spots available to ring the bell for Salvation Army. This is a Rotary tradition since 1932 and the need has probably never been greater since those depression years. We are asked to do two things: ring the bell with children, grandchildren, spouse or a friend and write a check payable to the Lafayette Rotary Foundation for Salvation Army. If you weren't at the meeting today, you can e-mail CARL REW to reserve a time and place after checking the schedule by clicking on "BELL RINGING SCHEDULE" in the column at the left.

    ROTARY FACT:

A national monument honoring 20 leaders of major volunteer movements in the United States, including Rotary founder Paul P. Harris, was unveiled in Washington, D.C., on 14 October.

Former President George Bush led the dedication ceremony for the Extra Mile-Points of Light Volunteer Pathway, a series of markers set along a milelong stretch of sidewalks near the White House and the U.S. Treasury Department.

"The Extra Mile will not only educate but inspire all those who walk its path," Bush said. "[It] should signal that greatness and goodness are not relegated to history books or confined to the existing monuments."

    PROGRAM:
WALLY TYNER introduced Bob Thompson, Gardner Prof. of Agricultural Policy at the Univ. of Illinois, former Dean of Agriculture at Purdue and former member of this club, who talked about population growth and global poverty. More than 53% of people on Earth live on less than $2 per day. For those who live on less than $1 per day (1.25 Billion), hunger is a constant problem. At the $2 per day level most people have access to enough calories. Bob had many interesting facts on this important subject, including the role of subsidies, resulting in several questions before the bell rang.
    VISITING ROTARIANS:

CRAIG ROBERTS, Flagstaff, AZ; NANCY TRAFTON, Lafayette Daybreak; and ED ELLIOTT, Naples, FL.

    STUDENT GUESTS:

PAUL POST introduced Katie Riddell and Joseph Fruland from Central Catholic High School. Each received a certificate and a travel mug with the four-way test to commemorate meeting with us.
