    VOCATIONAL MOMENT:

With delightful bursts of humor, HARLEY FREY, JR. described how one can have two careers at the same time. Born in Toledo, OH in 1920, he was the first in his family to be educated beyond the 8th grade. Through some twists of fate, he decided to study chemical engineering at the University of Toledo, switching to pre-med his sophomore year. During this time he played in a dance band to pay college bills. Music and medicine are intertwined in his life as he practiced anesthesiology in Lafayette and played in several bands for many years. We are fortunate to have HARLEY as our pianist every other month here at Rotary.

    ROTARY FACT:

January is Rotary Awareness Month. President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar urges all Rotarians to be aware of Rotary's goals. Rotary is an organization that works for peace and better understanding between people. The President also urges us to be aware of Rotary's annual emphases. This year, we are working extensively with literacy, water management, health and hunger as well as concentrating on Rotary's public image. PROGRAM BLOCK

    PROGRAM:
CAROLINE BRIGGS and JOHN MORRIS of Lafayette Daybreak Rotary Club brought pictures and plans for helping people in El Salvador. The International Project involves electricity and water for an orphanage as well as equipment for a hospital. The $8,000 commitment on the part of Daybreak will be matched by the District and RI.

JASON SCOTT from Rotaract talked about their project in Jamaica called Project Unite. It is a effort to equip schools and help the education system in part of Jamaica. The cost is $10,000.
JACK KELLEY showed pictures of places he and DOUG TAYLOR are familiar with in Haiti where water born diseases far exceed HIV/AIDs. A project to drill water wells would cost our club $4,000 with the prospect of matching funds from District and RI.

    PRESIDENT SUSAN'S WISDOM:

Some New Year's Resolutions You Might Be Able to Keep:

    Gain some weight.
Get in a whole new rut.
Spend your summer vacation in Cyberspace.
    Create loose ends.
Focus upon the faults of others.
Spread out your priorities beyond your ability to keep track of them.
    Mope about your faults.
Never make New Year's resolutions again.
