    • SUSAN announced the final numbers on the Salvation Army Campaign. Our club raised a total of $15,238.01 from the kettles and 113 Rotarians. Well done!

    EVERY ROTARIAN EVERY YEAR:

In support of the Annual Programs Fund of Rotary International, 85 Rotarians have given a total of $9,169. We are now at 37% and $39.86/capita. The Rotary year runs from July 1-June 30, so we have time to improve both our percentage participation and our per capita gift. The District 6560 Conference will be held in Muncie April 6-9, and thermometers from all clubs will be on display, so if you could make your contribution by the end of March it would be very helpful.

    ROTARY FACT:

A few prominent Rotarian scientists and engineers from the US and around the world: Neil Armstrong, astronaut and first man to walk on the moon; Clarence Birdseye, developer of a process for quick freezing food; Frank Borman, astronaut; Richard Byrd, admiral and Artic explorer; Thomas A. Edison, in ventor; Thor Heyerdahl, explorer and oceanographer; Albert Schweitzer, physician, philosopher and Nobel Prize laureate in peace; and Martin Jischke, fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and president of Purdue University.

    PROGRAM:
SUSAN introduced MARTIN JISCHKE, President of Purdue University, whose message was titled: A Gathering Storm: U.S. Faces Challenge as World Leader in Science and Engineering. In this very interesting speech he underscored the fact that young people are not interested in going into the sciences and engineering; that international students have been prevented from attending our universities and that other countries are pouring resources into educational facilities and graduating many more scientists and engineers. The United States needs to take action to stay in the race.

He cited the Land Grant Act of 1862, the GI Bill of 1944 and the National Defense Education Act of 1958 as the kind of forward thinking action the Congress might take.

For those of you who are new to Rotary, and those of you who just never knew this, in Rotary everyone is equal. That began with the founders and continues today. The groups of men who were Rotarians for eighty years before women were admitted used first names. After the inclusion of women, the custom did not change. Titles are not used. Our club has many doctors, physicians, a judge, a captain, several reverends and a former mayor. When you hear me call someone by a first name, it is not meant disrespectfully. It is the Rotary way!
