    PROGRAM:

GREG REGER, chair of the Service Above Self Award Committee, announced that JIM HANKS was this year's recipient.

AL CHISCON described JIM, who is a 30 year member of Rotary, as thoughtful, articulate, a natural leader who inspires others and continuously optimistic.

Accepting the award, JIM referred to himself as an "old geezer" and quoted from a Frank Sinatra hit entitled "My Way": Regrets, I've had a few - and yet too few to mention."

A few of JIM'S regrets include not being a student or employee of Purdue; not being assigned by State Farm to West Lafayette until he was 51 years old; and not serving as President of Rotary when he was asked back in the '80's. He also regrets that Civic Theater didn't revive "The Sunshine Boys" starring Al Chiscon and Jim Hanks when both were able to memorize lines. JIM remembered the accomplishments of past recipients ARNI COHEN, LIZ SOLBERG, Dick Jaeger, JoAnn Vorst, BOB BROCK, CHRISTI SMITH and SONYA MARGERUM, noting that he was honored to be in such company. He thanked the Rotary in the manner of George M. Cohan and Bob Hope. Then he ended with his own signature, "Thanks from HANKS."

DONNA MELOY introduced the winners of Vocational Scholarships. Each will receive $1,000 toward college expenses. Nicole Capehart commutes from Jasper County and attends Ivy Tech. Catherine Henderson is studying biotechnology at Ivy Tech and hopes to go to medical school. Lara Rodgers is studying administrative assistance in applied sciences at Indiana Business College to secure a better future for her family. Courtney Story is in the business school at Indiana Business College and wants to become a businesswoman.
