STAN MITHOFER introduced members celebrating a birthday in April and announced that $2,300 had been collected so far. We sang Happy Birthday to this generous group!

    ANNOUNCEMENTS:

    • Committee Selection forms are available at the back table. We need one from each of you.

    • There will be no Annual Dinner this year. Due to decreasing interest for the last several years the Committee decided to cancel the event. We will do all of the usual annual recognitions at our regular meeting on June 27th. This will be a longer than usual meeting, so please block 11:30 - 1:30 p.m. on your calendar that day.

    • Junior Achievement is looking for volunteers. This is a Vocational Project of this Club. Anyone who can help should contact JAN.

    • On behalf of FRITZ COHEN, JAN thanked VICKI BURCH, DAVE LAHR, MARCHA CHISCON, PETER KLINE, JERRY COLE, LEW RUNNELS, FRANCIS PRITSCHER, CHRISTA KECK, and JERRY McCARTHY for their work at Shots Not Spots. She thanked FRITZ COHEN for his work in organizing and working the event.

    • TOM FREY introduced Natalie Beam and Rachel Lime with the Purdue Habitat for Humanity Chapter, who talked about logistics for the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament on September 30 and October 1st. They want to match a Rotarian with a member of their club to facilitate making this event a big win for everyone. Funds generated for Rotary's portion would build a playground for the CAPE Grant program at the old Washington School. Funds generated for the Habitat Chapter will build at least one house. Anyone willing to help should contact PHIL and TOM soon. There will be a job for all Rotarians to make this a successful fund-raiser.

    • Business card sized guest invitation cards are available at JANE'S table. Each of us is responsible for bringing in new members.

    ROTARY FACT:

April is Rotary Magazine Month. Rotary International today claims a unique communications network - The Rotarian, the official English language magazine of Rotary International, which is published at world headquarters in Evanston, IL, USA, and 31 Rotary World Magazine Press magazines that are independently produced in their countries across the globe.

The 31 regional magazines are published in more than 20 different languages, distributed in 132 countries, and have a combined circulation of 769,000. This successful communications network has steadily grown throughout the century along with Rotary itself.

    PROGRAM:
GORDON COPPOC introduced Craig Brater, Dean of the IU School of Medicine for the last six years, who related the story of "A Life Sciences Economy" by telling us about himself first. His grandparent's farm near Connersville was his early connection to Indiana. He says with certainty that he is the only med school faculty member who has won a ribbon showing livestock at the State Fair. Related to animals, Indiana's Medical School has a herd of very specialized pigs - housed at Purdue and used to study diabetes. Some other Med school statistics: 2nd largest in the country with 280 students (Illinois has 300), with nine campuses; $820 million business with 10% coming from the State; very talented students who are equal to others across the nation upon entering the program and when tested at the end of the program do better than the national average.
Research provides 90% of the funds for the school. Life science companies that spring from the research create employment and dollars in the community. More funds are needed from all sources to double the amount of research in the next 7 - 10 years.
